Ausiello Files (May 1): Dollhouse exclusive: Alpha breaks his silence!

What can you tell me about next week's finale?
TUDYK: Everything that Alpha has done has been about Echo. He's obsessed with this woman. And next week you find out what his plans are for her, and why he's obsessed with her.

    Will Alpha's other personalities emerge?
TUDYK: Yes. I think he has 43 of them. Tim Minear wrote and directed the next episode, and he outdid himself. It's cl@ssic Tim Minear.

Fox execs explain why they kept Dollhouse and killed Sarah Connor

excerpt: (ck out the link for the entire article)
Kevin Reilly, Fox's president of entertainment, said that ratings were not the only factor when it came to deciding whether the low-rated Dollhouse would get a second season and remain on Friday nights.

"First, it's a bet on [creativity], and that's something that has never changed," Reilly said. "And I'm happy to say we're doing that. You know how inspired Joss Whedon is. It's a bet on Joss. The DVR numbers are a marker for us, so it is a factor, and we did see an uptick in the ratings from a 1.5 to a 2. That was a pattern for us that we liked, betting on Joss, and I think you're going to see it grow next season."

...if we'd canceled Joss' show I'd probably have 110 million e-mails this morning from the fans," he said with a laugh. "So that's exactly right. Bet on something that has a core that you believe can work."

...doesn't mean Fox will accept low numbers on Friday nights, said Peter Rice, Fox's chairman of entertainment. "We think that we can grow the show," he said, adding: "The show became much stronger creatively during the course of the season. Joss feels very energized about it. And we believe in him as a creator. We've had a lot of success in the past, and we feel that he can build the show, and it can grow in the new season ... and that Friday is a good place for it to do that."

Yeah, but he renewed Dollhouse in fear of backlash from the Whedon fans, which makes him a coward. I do absolutely love that Dollhouse got renewed but the reason for it is rather sh*t and who knows if FOX'll even air the 13 episodes they promised. Everytime he talks, my BS meter goes into complete overdrive. So, yeah, maybe he is a douche in the other sense too; needs to wash off all that BS he's spouting

He don't care about no backlash! What is he, some little boy, like skipping in the street and some guys come over and go "hey, ring that guys doorbell or we'll beat you up!" and he goes "oh noes, okay" cause he's scared of some backlash?!?

    No way!

Well, obviously not in that sense. Dollhouse's cancellation at this point in time would've reflected badly on FOX (coz of Firefly) , hence the decision to renew it. Thats all I meant.

Nah, Fox aired 12 episodes, in order, at the same time every week and the finale got a 1.1

Nobody could have reasonably called Firefly 2 if he decided to cancel it.

He renewed it cause he's a cool guy.

There still would've been a backlash regardless.

But he's got, like, leggings made out of chain mail or something and he'd have been "er, what was that? Was there some kind of backlash there cause I didn't feel nuthin'".

Well, to be fair, what you're saying will have played a part.

If they'd cancelled Dollhouse after everybody saying about how Friday night was where they put shows they don't want then it wouldn't have looked good. It would have looked to the casual observer like they never gave it a chance (even though they kinda did). It would have made it harder to launch any more sci-fi shows in future. It would have all but ended Joss' involvement in network tv so they'd lose that asset for the forseeable future. It's fair to say there was a certain amount of goodwill involved in the decision.

Anyway Reilly himself said he thought TSCC had lost it's way creatively whereas Dollhouse was just getting going and that pretty much agrees with most people who've seen both shows.

I'm not saying that I think Dollhouse will get it's whole second season aired. It's numbers stink so it has to get a move on and become more popular but I, for one, hope it does. I'm glad it's been given the chance. At the very least it's another 13 episodes in the bag that will live on on DVD.

Reilly seems fairly low on the BS-meter tbh. He's got a track record of renewing low-rated-but-critically-acclaimed shows. Sure, it's a lot about the money but he's a guy who believes that high quality can mean highly profitable. That makes him a cool guy.

I agree he is a cool guy. I don't believe in the creativity thing though. Or that they believe ratings will grow.

I think FOX kept Dollhouse cause they believe DVD and iTunes sales kick a$$. Plus, they're giving the show peanuts for funding.
