  • The misadventures of Gordon Maple, a "lesser-known English dramatist", as he struggles to support his oddball family by writing unfilmable movie scripts for Hollywood.

What a marvellous comedy series this was! Why has it never been repeated or issued on video or DVD? This series was produced by the BBC's drama department, not its comedy department, and every episode ran 50 minutes instead of half-an-hour, with no laugh track. George Cole gave a great performance as the harassed but spiky playwright, producing arty flops for the theatre but making lots of money by writing screenplays for unbelievable Hollywood rubbish - the first season concentrated on his efforts to produce a scenario entitled "Thundering Hooves", based on the life of Genghis Khan. The show presented the theatre/movies divide with great good humour - one world was quite as mad as the other. Was Gordon Maple a thinly-disguised version of scriptwriter Charles Wood? It seemed highly likely.moreless
