  • As usual for the series, a good sense of dichotomy and a message that's well-drawn in a half hour.

Goaded by his friend Vinnie, Doogie decides to throw a party in his parent's absence - even though he is on-call at the hospital.

There is something about this show that really is fairly successful, and I don't expect it. First of all, Bochco shows some real versatility in trimming his usual extended stories and hour long format to a half hour program here. Secondly, the premise is better than it seems, the problems of growing up and maturing are made more pointed by having a star who lives in the world of teens and the profession of medicine. Who would have thought it?

The story here is not unique, throwing a party and having it get out of hand. But it's handled better than many other series, Vinnie is funny, the incidences aren't completely shallow. But with this program you have the best re-inforcement of all - if the main character acts like a dope, he potentially jeopardizes lives (in this case driving after drinking a beer and missing a cardiac patient's emergency). The writing is a cut-above in making these points while still having the characters play fairly believable.

I really didn't watch many episodes of this program when it ran, but it is much better than many might give it credit for.
