Chicago and Pacific Palisades, CA (from Lonesome Doog episode) are 2,152 mile using I-40E and 2,037 miles using I-80E. At legal speed limits the time necessary to travel the distance is 1 day 8 hours to 1 day 10 hours. The story takes place the day before Wanda's birthday, which is when Doogie wants to arrive. Even without the car troubles, Doogie couldn't arrive at the stated time in the episode.
