At legal speed limits the time necessary to travel the distance is 1 day 8 hours to 1 day 10 hours. The story takes place the day before Wanda's birthday, which is when Doogie wants to arrive. Even without the car troubles, Doogie couldn't arrive at the stated time in the episode.
