The students at Bluffington School are cast in the school play, which shows the historic founding of the town. But when Judy is hired as director, she decides to take on a more "modern" approach to the story. But Mr. Bone doesn't want an updated version, so Doug has to stick up for his sister to avoid a boring performance.

Judy slightly breaks the fourth wall by asking if Roger is the 'blue one', referencing one of the many off-colors to their skin. This reference is never noted through the rest of the series or by any other characters.

There are several other cast members in the pageant besides Doug, Patti, Chalky, Skeeter, and Roger and his gang. (You see them in the dressing room in between their acts) But at the end of the pageant, none of them are in the bows. And not only that, Beebe made a short appearance dressed as the fork, but she is also not in the bows (or on stage during the second half of the pageant).
