It is now 1918 and Downton is still running to capacity as a convalescent home for wounded officers. Things, however, are not going so well between Cora and Isobel, who have a major falling out which causes Isobel to quit the house and go to help out the Red Cross in France.
Mary is being questioned from all sides about Sir Richard Carlisle and Sybil finds herself dealing with Branson as well as defending her friendship with him.
Bates comes back into the picture which, personally, I found annoying because although I love the idea of Mary and Matthew perhaps ending up together, the whole Bates and Anna thing leaves me cold.
The last couple of scenes were excellent and I feel sorry for Ethel, but even more so for Mary who is clearly in pain.
Maggie Smith, as usual, was brilliant and she truly does get the best lines from Julian Fellowes' pen.
From the preview, I'd say the next episode will be very interesting indeed.
