Episode Summary

EDIT

It is 1918, and with the end of the war in sight, it looks as though it won't be too long before life can return to relative normality at Downton Abbey, however, Cora and Isobel clash once more over what is to be done with the house when the Armistice is declared.

A Canadian officer arrives at Downton to assist in his return to health but some of the things he imparts to Lady Edith could cause problems for the Crawley family. Meanwhile, Bates once again finds that he has to deal with Vera and must travel to London to do so. His Lordship tells him to keep calm, but will he be able to do so?

Ethel is struggling as a new mother but is receiving a lot of help and support from Mrs. Hughes until Mr. Carson finds out, which may possibly be problematic for all concerned.

  • One of the best episodes so far, and that is saying a lot, given the quality of the series as a whole.

    9.5
The war will soon be over but a newly-returned Isobel still wants to use Downton as some type of convalescent home, an idea cleverly stalled by the clever Violet and Cora who want the house back the way it was.

Matthew is now in a wheelchair and spending a lot of time talking to Mary but the biggest shock for everyone is the arrival of a badly burned Canadian officer who tells the family that he survived the sinking of the Titanic and is, in fact, Patrick Crawley, heir to the Earl of Grantham. Having been desperately in love with Patrick, Edith wants with all her heart to believe him but it seems that she is the only one and he soon departs.

Bates is having yet more trouble with Vera and must make a trip to London to try and deal with her once again. Everyone is glad when the Armistice is declared but there are still many adjustments to make for every member of the Crawley family and quite a few for the staff as well.

A superb episode and one not to be missed. Amazing acting by all and a fantastic script.moreless
