Downtown Girls: The Hookers of Honolulu

Show Summary

Downtown Girls: The Hookers of Honolulu airing on HBO, is a documentary drama series that sheds light on society's many hidden aspects; in this instance, prostitution. In downtown Honolulu, everything is for sale and the sex industry is one of the most profitable industries in the city. Prostitution flourishes despite it's illegality, as demand is high for trans-gender and she-male prostitutes. This is not an undercover show that tries to catch the wrong-doers. This show is aimed at the concerns of those working in the sex industry. These issues give a feel of what it is like to work in the branch, with concerns over violent clients and over sexually transmitted diseases. Honolulu has had a history of illegal prostitution involving trans-genders and for the first time this unseen side of reality is shown to the public. The show is raw, cruel and highly realistic, despite offering a somewhat glamorous aspect of the sex workers of Honolulu. It introduces the audience to the universe of sex workers and this causes controversy and repulsion due to the reality of the lives presented to the audience.moreless
