Episode Summary

EDIT
Community relations is the theme, as Friday and Gannon try to narrow the gap between the Department and the citizens it is sworn "to protect and to serve." The gap is especially wide between African-Americans and the primarily Caucasian LAPD, as demonstrated by two plots lines. These lines start together as Friday and Gannon hold a community relations meeting. In this meeting are a young male and an older couple this episode follows their story. A pair of police officers stop the older Afro-American couple. The officers approach and interrogate them as if they were criminals. The couple feels hurt and angry on how the officers treated them. Friday and Gannon help the couple and officers bridge the gap. The young - and slightly militant - black man barricades himself in his apartment rather than submit to a traffic warrant. Friday talks him down. At the end of the episode real life Chief Thomas Redding makes a plea for a mutual understanding between the community, you, and your police.moreless

With all the problems that we are seeing in the media though out the country between citizens and the police today, to see this 1968 episode of Dragnet let me know how Jack Webb felt about police relations in the communities around the country in a era where police trust was at its all time low in the African - American community. I think he did a great job communicating the concerns of both parties with this episode.moreless
