  • Probably the best Dragon Ball movie/special.

I've been wondering, is this a movie or just a TV special? Opinions vary, but there's one thing we can agree on, it is absolutely brilliant. This is the first...I'll go on and call it a movie, since so many other here already has labeled it as such. Anyway, this is the first Dragon Ball movie I watched. I actually watched Dragon Ball Evolution before this one, yeah, the less said about that the better. 20th Century Fox, you are more evil than Freeza. But back to this, it rocks, it tells the story of Bardock, the father of Goku and his desperate attempt to change the future. It's not wall to wall battles and Kamehameha's. The action that is here is spectacular and it doesn't take over and sidelines the story.

It's really dramatic and it's filled with brutal violence and true tragedy. It's very downbeat, however there is brief moment that provides a glimmer of hope for Bardock before he dies. Of course we all know that Goku would grow up to fight Freeza. The moment where Bardock has this future vision, on the one hand it's appreciated and makes his death a bit less tragic. However, I would've liked to have seen a bit more, maybe a few seconds of Goku pummeling Freeza.

Out of the few Dragon Ball movies I have seen this is by far the best one, and more importantly it made me want to check out more of the series, and it washed the bad taste of DBE out of my mouth.moreless

Bardock is a Third-Class soldier, although very powerful for one. He is the leader of a small crew. Shortly after clearing out Kanassa with them, a planet known for its mysterious psychic powers, Bardock is attacked by Tooro, the last survivor. He strikes Bardock in the back of the neck, causing him to black out, and end up in a rejuvination tank. He gains the ability to see the future. He sees his newly-born son, Kakarrot, grow up on Earth, and Planet Vegeta explode. When he recovers, he learns that his crew has left for the Planet Meat. He finds most of his crew dead, his best friend Tora still dying. He explains that they were slaughtered by Dodoria and his men, under order of Freiza. Freiza fears the Saiyan's strength. Tora asks Bardock to recruit men to kill Freiza, and show him the power of the Saiyans. With that, Tora dies. Bardock covers a cloth in Tora's blood, and wraps it around his head in a makeshift bandana. He kills Dodoria's men, but is easily defeated by Dodoria. Bardock hurries to Planet Vegeta. He learns that Kakarrot has been sent to Earth, meaning that the visions were true. He tries to recuit men in the bar, but they laugh at him. He tells them they are all dead, and leaves to fight Freiza himself. He has a major vision of meeting Kakarrot as an adult on Namek. He reaches out to Kakarrot, but when he turns around, he becomes Freiza, and Bardock is blown away by Frieza's death ball attack.moreless

This is the story of Goku's father, Bardock. At this time, Goku has just been born, and Frieza is ruling over planet Vegeta. After Bardock receives the ability to see into the future, he sees that Frieza is going to destroy planet Vegeta. After seeing this, Bardock tries to warn some of the saiyans, but they don't listen to him. Since Bardock isn't receiving any help, he decides to take on Frieza by himself. When the time comes that Frieza tries to destroy the planet, Bardock tries to blast Frieza...but is quickly destroyed. However, throughout the entire movie, Bardock also pictures Goku in the future, fighting Frieza. So when Bardock is blasted by Frieza, he dies knowing that his son will avenge the saiyans.moreless

  • Best DBZ movie/special...

    10
    "Perfect"
An amazingly well done DBZ special. The movie tells of Bardock, Goku's father's life. The special begins with "Cha-La Head Cha-La" the beautiful DBZ special that represents the show playing. Bardock faces off against Freeza to determine the Emporer of the Universe. Not only is this my favorite, but it basicially "re-define's" the entire Dragon Ball 519 chaptered, 444 episodes, and an amazingly large franchise! Bardock's crew is slowly killed, while Bardock fights off Freeza's guards, it's obvious that this is an awesome, thought out, and great movie that is very enjoyable! Unlike other DBZ movies, with the exception of History of Trunks, this is enjoyable! I reccomend this to anyone who loves emotion and thought out strategies! This movie is extremely addicitive, and has made it's way too my favorite DBZ movie/special!moreless

this movie is about goku's father: bardock. it takes place when goku is a day old and frieza has control over the saiyans. after bardock is beaten badly, his comrades fear that he will get killed someday. but having the zenkai ability, he gets stronger after every battle. bardock recieved the gift of seeing the future from an alien on a planet he took over, and sees his own son (kakarot, but as earthlings call him "goku") facing frieza and defeating him. but bardock also sees planet vegeta being destroyed in a vision. he tells other saiyans that dont believe him, so he confronts frieza himself. a foolish move of course; frieza lifts his finger and with one energy blast, bardock, the saiyan race, and planet vegeta are completely destroyed, while goku is in a spacepod flying toward earth. and so begins the exciting life of goku and his friendsmoreless

    • At the end of the movie, it shows Grandpa Gohan picking up Goku away from the space pod without him noticing it. Yet in the 1st episode of Z, Gohan found Goku in the pod. Also, in the 1st episode the flashback included Goku before hitting his head was a big pain in the neck, yet in the movie he is happy boy.

      Edit
    • Goof: In Bardock's prophecy at the end where he saw that Kakorat would one day confront Frieza, he had glimpsed Frieza in his first form sitting in his space-transport. This was an animation mistake because, Goku only confronted Frieza in Frieza's final form.

    • "Bardock" is a pun on the Japanese vegetable dish "burdock," keeping the constant name pun for Saiyans. His crew also maintains the name pun: - "Totapo" = "potato" - "Toma" = "tomato" - "Panbukin" = "pumpkin" - "Selypa" = "parsley" (Note that some of these names may only be for the Japanese version) Edit
    • The Bardock Special has a big resemblance to the Orgin of SuperMan:The Last Son of Krypton. Jor-El/Bardock fights against Krypton/Frieza. Krypton/Frieza destroys the planet Krypton/Vegeta. Goku/Kal-El goes to Planet Earth is raised by Granpa Gohan/The Kents.
