Episode Summary

EDIT
Embodiment of Fire
Even Goku's powerful Kaio-Ken Attack is no match for the giant of evil, Frieza. Meanwhile Captain Ginyu, in Bulma's body, plots to switch yet again, and with Piccolo, but his attempts are cut short when Gohan throws Bulma, (in a frogs body) in the way of Ginyu's body switching beam, resulting in Bulma being returned to her original body, and Ginyu being returned to the body of a frog. Goku is thrown underwater, and Frieza tries to drown him, but a vision of his close friends and family being violently murdered, and his planet destroyed, gives Goku the encouragement he needs to raise his Kaioken attack to twenty times normal power. Goku fires a Kamehameha at Frieza, and for a moment it looks like Goku has claimed victory, but no, Frieza is alive. What can Goku do now.moreless

  • Keio ken, x20!

    7.5
Goku seems to be losing against Frieza, but on the bright side, in an attempt to capture Piccolo's body, Gohan threw the frog, which was Bulma at the time, in front of the ray, and Bulma and Ginyu regained their original--well, not for Ginyu at least--bodies! Goku was indeed getting his ass kicked, but he never gave up hope, and continued battling the universal monster. When his life seemed to be nearing an end, Goku simulated what the universe might be like if Frieza were allowed to rule it. It fired him up, and he performed a Keio ken attack, x20! It seemed like Frieza wouldn't have been able to withstand his kamehameha attack, but he remained.

Dragged out like usual, little progressment in story, not much significant stuff happening to warrant it but an average rating. Though I guess this episode was a little better compared to the previous ones. Even though that mental thought of Goku's was dragged out--showed way too many damn people to have any emotional effect--it did at least justify why he got stronger. That was badass how he summoned up enough strength to do a keio ken x20, and then blast a kamehameha wave right in Frieza.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • At the end of the last episode, Gohan and Krillin had already figured out Captain Ginyu was in Bulma's body. But at the beginning of this episode they still don't know.

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Frieza: I can do this one or two ways your end can be fast or painfully slow.

    • Goku: You may be stronger than me Frieza, a hundred times stronger, and you may have me down, but I am not about to give up now, and I will do whatever it takes, even if it destroys me to finish you off once and for all, to give you what you deserve.
Frieza: Your speeches put me to sleep, but I guess everyone has to have last words.

    • Piccolo: (referring to Goku and Frieza's power) No, the difference between their respective reserves was too great.

  • NOTES (3)

    • Japanese Airdate: May 15th, 1991

    • Japanese Title: Showdown!! The Embodiment of Flame in a 20x Kaio-ken Kamehame-Ha

    • Goku's dream sequence: It was written for Movie 3, but occasionally shows up in the episodes, and it adds a haunting beauty to whatever scene it appears in. Then with the sequence that shows the faces of Goku's Earth friends flashing by rapidly. In the dub, we see their faces, and hear each of them laughing. Incidentally, Lunch is one of the people who appears in this sequence, which will only confuse American viewers who don't know who she is because FUNi skipped most of Dragon Ball and cut all of her scenes from DBZ. Amusingly, she is the only person whose laugh we don't hear.
