  • This episode adds a lot to the series

This is a pretty big episode in the grand scheme of things. Really it kind of symbolizes the transformation of Vegeta into a better person. (Yes people there is a story line to DBZ it's not ALL fights). That and I'm not sure but I think this is the first (and only?) episode with a reference to Goku's father. There's 'filler' in this episode but not in the sense as your normal filler, this is filler that truly does build the story line. Either way this is an essential DBZ episode to watch and is one of my faves. Blah.moreless

Frieza almost defeats Vegeta, but, Goku arrives just in time, and challenges the almighty Frieza. Frieza remembers Bardock, the father of Goku, who challenged Frieza long ago, who looked exactly like Goku except for a scar on the cheek. Goku becomes the first one to hit & hurt Frieza in his final form & pushes away Frieza's death blow attacks by merely slapping them. Frieza realises that Goku's a saiyan & Vegeta realizes rhat he's a super saiyan & laughs at Frieza who's in trouble now. Frieza becomes angry & finishes the proud prince & Vegeta makes a dying declaration & pleads Goku to kill him. Goku buries him & Promises avenge the death of all the saiyans & every one he had killed. The ultimate battle begins...moreless

It is indeed a tearjerker Vegeta my fav character dies in this one but before he goes all out he tells Goku everything about the way he suffered as a child and how he served Frieza for nothing because if h didn't his dad will be executed Frieza killed him anyway making Vegeta what he is and what amkes it even sadder is that Vegeta has been holding those tears back for years.moreless

This episode actually made me shed tears, and I'm 17! Vegeta got the crap beaten out of him, and This is the only other episode- besides Episode 222 that Vegeta got people all sympathetic about him.

I kinda felt like reaching out and hugging Veggie. . . My friends thought that was very immature, and i know it is- but Vegeta's Character is based on a set of human emotions. Pride, Power, Arrogance, impatience, doubt and of course anger. Vegeta's characters the most drastically changed in the series, since he's come to terms with the fact of the matter being that Earth is his home now, and he needs to get used to it!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • After Vegeta dies, Goku tells Gohan to leave. Krillin flies into the air and turns around to tell Gohan to hurry. Upon speaking with him, Krillin is in Master Roshi's martial arts clothing, not the Saiyan armor. In the next scene he is back to the Saiyan armor.

    • When Vegeta is going to be killed by Frieza, we see Frieza grabbing him by his neck and lifting him up. Vegeta has a hole on his battle suit made by Krillin in a previous episode. However, in some shots, the hole is nowhere to be seen.

  • QUOTES (7)

    • (Vegeta died seconds before)
Goku: Goodbye Vegeta. You're not as cold-hearted as you believed yourself to be. A heart of stone can't shed tears the way you did. You must've been holding them back your whole life... I'm the only one left. (Goku blows a hole in the earth and picks up Vegeta's body) I think I understand you now. You weren't grieving over your own death, or because our home planet was destroyed. (Goku shoots a nasty look at Frieza) You were grieving because he turned you into what he wanted you to be. You never had a chance to be anything else. (Goku puts Vegeta's body in the grave and buries it) Well, I still respect you. I know you made a lot of mistakes, but now I see that they weren't all your fault. You had the firey will of a Saiyan.

    • Frieza: Nice move, but your shoe came untied.
Goku: I'm not going to fall for that, I don't even have shoelaces.
Frieza: Darn, I guess you're a little smarter than the average Saiyan.

    • Vegeta: If there is a god he must be good for letting me live long enough to see this day, how great, to see you beaten by a saiyan. (Frieza then blasts Vegeta)
Frieza: That's enough of that, loud mouth, on and on like a broken record.
Goku: Oh no! What's your problem, he was no threat to you anymore, he couldn't even defend himself, there's no honour in that.
Frieza: It was the only way I could get him to shut up, he insists on babbiling about that stupid legend, there's no such thing as a super saiyan.
Vegeta: Hey Kakarot, don't be so soft, there's no stinking honour in any of this, it's just a game, play to win, there are no rules. You're going to have to get over your soft heartedness, you have to, they'll get you killed, they'll get you killed Kakarot.
Goku: I can't, I can't change who I am, not on the battlefield, my feelings are my guide.
Vegeta: Fool, you don't know what you're dealing with.

    • Vegeta: Please Kakarot, you have to beat him. He made me what I am. He killed all of our people, your father, and mine. Please Kakarot, please beat him...please...

    • (Vegeta is dying)
Vegeta: (to Goku) Kakarot, listen to me....theres no stinking honor in this its a game played to win there are no rules. Your going to have to forget about your soft heartedness do it you have to forget about your feelings. They'll get you killed. They'll get you killed, Kakarot.
Goku: I can't. I can't change who I am, not on the battle-field. My feelings are my guide. Besides, everyone deserves a chance to change their ways, just like you had.
Vegeta: Fool. You don't know what... you're... dealing with. (cut to several scenes of the Saiyans working for Frieza, and then of Frieza destroying them)
      Goku: Save your strength Vegeta.
Vegeta: No, there's more. He killed our home planet. It... was him.
Frieza: He's just a corpse and he's still blabbing. I'll have to gag him to shut him up.
Vegeta: Your father, and mine, the whole planet. He belw it up. It's true... no ones survived but us. Ask him if you want... he'll tell you... he's proud of it.
Goku: Please stop talking Vegeta! It's zapping all your strength!
Vegeta: No! Listen! You have to hear this! (he starts crying) We worked so hard for him. We did everything he asked of us and more... He took me from my father when I was just a little boy. He made me do whatever he wanted, and said he would kill my father if he didn't. I did everything he asked, but he killed him anyway, along with everyone else. He was scared of us... scared that a Super Saiyan would be born, to rise up and over-throw him.
      Frieza: A touching story.
Goku: Please, no more. Save your strength.
Vegeta: Kakarot...please...destroy Frieza... He made me what I am. Don't...let him...do it...to anyone else... Whatever it takes...stop him...please... (Vegeta dies)

    • Vegeta: Destroy Frieza...he made me what I am...

    • Vegeta: I'm glad to see that Frieza will be destroyed by his worst fear...a Super Saiyan.

  • NOTES (4)

    • Japanese Airdate: April 10th, 1991

    • Japanese Title: Bitter Regret! The Proud Vegeta Dies.

    • Bardock says to Frieza "Don't be afraid men!" as if all the people behind him were his to command. However, in the Bardock movie, those were actually Frieza's men, whom were trying to stop Bardock from advancing any closer.

    • Vegeta's deathbed speech was horribly changed in the English version to make it look like Frieza made him the way he is, when all Saiyans act the way Vegeta did (except Goku and Gohan). Vegeta's speech explained how the Saiyans were Freeza's most loyal henchmen, but he killed them all without mercy because he feared that one day the Super Saiyans would rise up and kill Frieza. Vegeta's dying words were "Please Kakarot... kill Frieza with your Saiyan hands!"

Goku proceeded to bury Vegeta and acknowledged that Vegeta never really cared about Frieza wiping out the Saiyans, but more about his own bruised ego about being used by Frieza. Goku then asks Vegeta got a bit of his pride and swears to kill Frieza in the name of all the Saiyans and Nameks he killed.
