  • Garlic Jr. reappears and has some evil plans to carry out.

Life has been peaceful for the Z fighters since getting back to Earth after Frieza was defeated. Krillin now has a girlfriend named Maron and Master Roshi is having a party at his house. Gohan sneaks out of the house to go to the party even though his mom told him he can't since she wants him to study. However trouble starts now that Garlic Jr. is back after being trapped in the Dead Zone. Garlic Jr. wants to be the guardian of Earth and carry out his evil plans. He starts out by trapping Mr. Popo and Kami in small glass bottles with the help of his henchmen the Spice Boys. Next Garlic Jr. gets the Black Water Mist and starts to unleash it on the people of Earth so that they all turn evil.

Overall this episode was a pretty good start to a new storyline. We get a new villain that the Z fighters have to contend with and we are left wondering how his plan will work out. The episode could've used more action but it's excusable as it's the first in the saga.moreless
  • Leave the garlic jr saga hate it

Garlic Jr release a mist ehich takes everybody in his contol except from marron, krillen, and gohan. And strangely piccolo! This saga sucks and shouldnt have been added!

  • Goku\'s still not back, but the Z fighters have pretty much returned to their normal lives. Krillin\'s got a girlfriend, Gohan\'s back to studying, and Piccolo\'s back to training. We\'re introduced to a new villain: Garlic Jr.moreless

Nothing really new and exciting here. This is a filler arc, as the \"flashback\" shows Gohan using powers that didn\'t actually awaken in the manga until Goku\'s battle with Raditz. Garlic Jr. is actually a villain from one of the movies.

Not much happens in this episode, and so it was pretty boring to watch. This filler arc doesn\'t look too exciting. It wasn\'t a horrible episode, as there were some funny parts with Master Roshi and Krillin\'s girlfriend, Maron, but a few funny parts don\'t make up for much in an all around failure of an episode.

After watching it with expectations of an entertaining storyline, I was disappointed. It just leaves viewers asking, \"Where\'s Goku?\"moreless
  • Garlic Jr. should have remained in the Dead Zone.

Things are at peace as the classic Z fighters crew await Goku's arrival. Gohan takes a swim, and is visited by his old pal Krillin. It seems that he has fetched himself a girlfriend named Maron, though he denies their close relationship and acts like friends. Everyone is partying at Master Roshi's house, except for Gohan, for he needs to study. So what he does instead is sneak out. Meanwhile, Piccolo during his training session was interrupted by Kame. He asks him to succeed him as the ruler of the earth. Piccolo rejects the offer, but tells him that something bad is about to happen. On Kame's lookout, Popo is watering flowers, when a bunch of goonies attack the manor, and enters Garlic Jr. They suppress Popo, and await for Kame to return. Kame and Garlic Jr. battle, but Kame was restrained by the paralysis webs of his subordinates. It seems that earth is going to be in some trouble.

An all right episode. Actually, not really. Garlic Jr. sucks as a villain, and having an entire arc on him just seems like a waste of time. This introduction episode featured less of him, which made it better. I'm a big fan of "slice of life" moments, and this sort of contained much of those types of scenes when everyone was partying at Master Rochi's place and having abnormal conversations. And the beginning scenes of Gohan adventuring through the forest excited a certain pleasure in my tastes. I'm not a fan of wildlife types of scenarios; in fact, those types of endings where civilization ends and everyone has to start over using forest and jungles as resources are extremely depressing to me. Though shounen animes somehow turn this around for me, and make it an enjoyable watch even if it was only for a couple minutes. This episode would have been better if it didn't have Garlic Jr., using his airtime minutes to show Piccolo doing more training.moreless
  • What was that?

The Frieza Saga was awesome. I couldn\\\'t help wonder what would happen after that exciting saga. Well, this is quite possibly the worst follow up show to begin a new saga. It didn\\\'t make sense, it wasn\\\'t cool. No sign of Goku. It was a filler episode with a filler saga and marked the lowest point of DBZ. I wouldn\\\'t even recommend this to my friend josh who has down syndrome.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (5)

    • Age Update: Gohan is 6, Goku and Chichi are 25, Krillin is 26, Bulma, Yamcha and Tien are 29, Vegeta is 30 and Oolong is 22.

    • Cut Scenes: All scenes involving Master Roshi attempting to fondle Marron have been cut out.

    • Inconsistency: Garlic Jr.

Episodes 93 through 102 of Dragon Ball Z feature Garlic Jr as the central villain.

Garlic Jr. originated as the main villain of DBZ Movie 1, "Dead Zone." This movie could not possibly fit into the anime's timeline for many reasons:

      - Gohan's hair and outfit would indicate that the movie takes place shortly before the appearance of Raditz; it obviously couldn't be after Raditz, because Goku was dead, and Gohan was training with Piccolo.
      - Krillin has no idea who Gohan is, suggesting that this happened during the gap between Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. However, when Goku introduces Gohan in the series, Krillin shows no sign of knowing him before that point.
      - Goku also has his Power Pole in this movie, which is impossible, because he left that atop Karin Tower.

In conclusion, the existence of the Garlic Jr. saga is simply one giant plot hole, since it is supposed to take place in the main anime timeline, but it is based on a movie that couldn't have possibly taken place in the same timeline.

    • Nitpick: Garlic's Escape

It is never explained how Garlic Jr. got out from the Dead Zone. It is understood that once you get in, you can never get out.

    • Inconsistency: In the dub, Garlic Jr. makes reference to the fact that Gohan sent him to the Dead Zone 10 years ago. But Gohan couldn't have been any older than 8 in the Garlic Jr Saga because Piccolo said he was an "11-year-old boy" during the Cell Games, and there was 3 years of training between the Trunks Saga and the Androids Saga. So Gohan wouldn't have even been born 10 years before the Garlic Jr Saga.

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Garlic Jr.: When people breathe this mist any evil tendancies that they're resisting take control of their character. They become mad with desire for wealth and material pleasure to the point of wanting to kill each other for it. Our army of darkness has always been here, we just have to wake it up.

    • Garlic Jr: Don't have a heart attack, old man, I don't want you to die before I have the pleasure of killing you.

    • Kami: Your evil deeds have no firm foundations, you're going to crumble, you can't succeed.
Garlic Jr.: Oh yes I can, you got lucky last time, if it wasn't for that kid I'd be sitting on your throne already.
