Gamblers Ruin
AIRED:
Harchester progress to the 5th round of the FA cup, beating League 2 side Cambridge Utd 2-0 with both goals coming from Lee Presley. During a post match interview Viv admits that the team did not play well and were lucky to come away with the win. He goes on to declare that he predicted they would win 2-0 just like he has over the season and then goes on to say he knows the outcome of the next few matches – and it doesn’t make nice reading. Eli confronts Viv and plays down his predicting skills but the rest of the lads back him up, saying that he can predict the future. Eli is intrigued and asks him to prove it. After seeing Viv’s wall of facts, Eli is still having none of it and asks Viv to give him one evening to prove that you can’t predict the future. Sofia sees Tommy canoodling with yet another beautiful woman and begins to realise that she has no chance with him. She and Tommy lose the girl and head to Studs together to enjoy themselves. Down at the bar Eli tells the lads to enjoy the drinks on him while he and Viv play a game of blackjack. Eli reaches a 19 and Viv urges him to take another card but he refuses. Viv takes the next card and it is revealed as a 2, which would have given Eli 21 if he had took Viv’s advice. Eli’s invites his friend and owner of Spartak Moscow, Nicolai Kulikov to take part in the game. The game heats up as Eli challenges Nicolai to cut the deck and highest card wins, with the winner gaining a player from the respective club. If Eli wins, he wants Spartak’s best player Romerez and if Nicolai wins he will take Tommy. Eli turns over a King of Hearts, which looks pretty safe, that is until Nicolai turns over the Ace of Diamonds meaning Tommy will move to Spartak Moscow leaving him stunned and Viv even more stunned, as he was sure Eli would have won. Sofia is furious that Eli has lost her client in a stupid bet and immediately puts a spanner in the works saying that Harchester can’t buy and sell a player in the same season under FA rules. Eli says that’s true, so he will give Nicolai the money to buy Tommy straight off of Chelsea leaving Harchester with virtually no midfield. Viv heads back up to his flat and tries to figure out a way to sort out their midfield problem. He hears someone enter the flat and is shocked to see his wife, Chelsea standing before him. Viv asks why she has come back. She tells him that she came back after Viv called her a few weeks ago and wants to make their marriage work. Viv flies off the handle and shouts at her for sleeping with one of his team mates and orders her out, saying he doesn’t want to speak to her right now. Lee finds Viv alone in his room and sees that he has put pictures and notes about Chelsea up on his wall and Viv tells him that she came back. Viv doesn’t know how to factor it in. Is he happy about her being back or not? It could boost their promotion chances or it could put Viv off his game altogether, he just doesn’t know how to take it. Sofia goes to tell Tommy that there is nothing she can do to get him out of the move to Moscow. Tommy tells her there must be something and pleads with her to get him out of it. Lee gathers the lads together in the players lounge to tell them that he spoke to Viv and Chelsea is back. Ryan perks up and starts asking questions but the lads tell him to steer clear and that Lee thinks she is sticking to the story that it was Clyde she was having an affair with. Dean and Don arrive in the boardroom to meet Eli and Nicolai who are ready to seal the Valentine deal. Don assures Eli that he is going nowhere and tells him he will not agree the personal terms, to which Eli responds saying every player has his price. Tommy enters the changing room followed by Viv and everyone tries to keep out of his way, especially Ryan. Out on the training pitch, Viv refuses to perform when it comes to Tommy’s exercise. Tommy is called into the boardroom where Nicolai tells him about Spartak. Nicolai is prepared to pay him £50,000-a-week, which Tommy turns his nose up at. Eli is prepared to pay him another £50,000- a-week on top of that which grabs his attention. The £1M signing on fee makes his mind up and he signs the contract. He tells Sofia that he has signed a lucrative contract, which she will get a tidy sum of commission from, but she doesn’t care about the money; she just wants Tommy to stay at Harchester. The two of them say their goodbyes by spending the night together and end up in bed leaving Sofia with a broken heart. Viv meets up with Chelsea on the riverbank and wants some answers from her. He asks her why she had an affair with Clyde to which she plays along. He asks her if she loved him to which she says no which incenses Viv that she left him for someone she never loved. Chelsea suggests that they get some help from a psychiatrist. Viv agrees that he needs to talk to someone, but on his own. He heads to the grange to meet up with Naomi Wyatt, a sports psychologist who he has dealt with before in the past. Viv tells her all about Chelsea and her affair with Clyde and asks for her help to deal with it. There talk makes Viv realise that Viv’s life has been fine since Chelsea left and his football has improved and so he sets out to erase Chelsea from his life. Naomi goes to see Dean at the club to express her worries over his state of mind. Viv catches the two of them together and is furious that she has been talking about him behind his back. Just then, Tommy, Nicolai and Eli emerge from the boardroom to declare that the transfer is complete. Eli can’t resist rubbing Viv’s nose in it and once again tells him that he can’t predict the future. Naomi disagrees however and proves that losing Tommy was predictable which leaves Viv with a relief and tells him he has a coach to catch for the Leeds game. Eli asks for his prediction to which he replies that they will lose 3-0. Ryan overhears that Viv has finished with Chelsea and skips going to watch the game to try and contact her. He leaves a message on her mobile and says he has to see her. Harchester give a debut to 16-year-old David Morrisey in place of Tommy. Leeds come out of the traps quickly and take the lead straight from kick-off. That sets the tone for the rest of the game as Leeds bombard Viv’s goal but they can’t get a 2nd decisive goal. Deep into injury time, Harchester snatch a late equaliser. For the second time, Viv got it wrong again and Eli gloats to him. Viv arrives home to find Chelsea still there. Chelsea says that he was wrong about the result and he is wrong about turning his back on their marriage. Chelsea apologises and Viv forgives her. Ryan receives a call from Chelsea and is confused when she tells him that she is not back in Harchester and tells him to leave her alone. Lee arrives home to hear Viv declaring his love for Chelsea and finds Viv tearing down his wall and Viv tells him that they have decided to give their relationship another go. Lee looks around the room but can only see Viv and suspects that he has been imagining Chelsea back in his life.moreless
