Episode Recap

The episode opens with the competitors watching an old film featuring various car crashes. Wendy decides to skip the film and calls the safe house again. The woman answers and says Sam has just gone to sleep and asks Wendy to not call again. Meanwhile Rob is angry that he was never informed of his friend's death and leaves his car in search of a pay phone. Just as he starts to walk away, the film changes into a new message from those coordinating the race. The message says that one team will be offered a "Jump Start Challenge." The winners turn out to be Alex and Corinna since they have made the biggest improvement in the standings. If they decide to accept the challenge they will be given the instructions on how to skip this check point and head to the next, putting them in an over 700 mile lead. Corinna is at first unsure that they should accept the challenge but Alex is only concerned with winning the overall race. Winston, who happens to be parked next to Alex, decides that he will follow Alex and try to gain the advantage as well. The rest of the racers are given a message on the phone saying: "Surrender, America" and the group heads out.
While driving to the challenge destination Alex and Corinna notice that one of the other drivers is tailing them. At a stop light, Winston pulls up next to them and offers to form an alliance with Alex, and says that if they help him now he will help them in the future. Alex accepts his offer but quickly shifts into reverse and takes off before Winston realizes what has happened. Corinna laughs and says "I knew there was a reason I choose you and not him." Alex becomes slightly concerned by this statement but soon gets over it.
The next morning Susan and Leigh finally arrive at the drive-in where they are given the news that they have been eliminated since they did not make it before sunset. Leigh seems okay with the decision but Susan says that God has been speaking to her and that He says "You will win this race." Mr. Bright apologizes but still insists that the pair have been eliminated and they must turn in their race phone. Reluctantly they turn over their phone. Back on the road Ivy has become annoyed with Wendy because she seems to be more focused on her son than on winning the race. Wendy apologizes and together they try to work out their clue. Down the road Rob is still preoccupied with calling into the base while Ellie tries to talk him out of it, to no avail. Alex and Corinna finally arrive in Sweetwater, GA where they learn that they must rob a bank in order to earn the jump start.
Alex (reluctantly) and Corinna tour inside the bank hoping to discover where vault 608 was located. They learn that 608 is a security deposit box located in a very secure vault. Ivy and Wendy are still trying to work out their clue when Wendy gets a call from the safe house. The woman reports that someone came in looking for Sam and that Wendy should come and get him for everyone's safety. Without a moment's pause Wendy slams on the brakes and flings the van around to go save Sam, who is in Ohio. Ivy freaks out because she has no idea what is going on. After Wendy fills her in and offers to drop her off wherever she would like along the way. "You would understand if you had a child. Some things are more important than money," she says, but Ivy is having none of it as she points the gun at her saying "No, they're not" and threatens her saying that she had better go nowhere but to the finish line. Outside Chattanooga, Tennessee, Rob has managed to find a pay phone and he gets in touch with a higher ranking office. The officer is not pleased and explains that there have been many attempts to get in touch with Rob. The officer then accuses Rob of going AWOL and says that he must report to the base in Oklahoma immediately. Susan tries her best to convince Leigh that God has started to speak to her since hurricane Katrina. She explains that when she met Leigh and Ivy the voice said "They will help you" and after they received the race phone the voice said "You are going to win this race." Susan decides there is no way she is quitting. Once their tour has finished Alex and Corinna leave the bank and Alex decides that there is no way they are robbing the bank but instead they should try to catch up to the others. Corrina points out that they have no clue what information the others received, so their only option is to rob the bank. Through ego boosting and smooth talking, Corinna convinces Alex that they can rob the bank, all they need is a little help. Meanwhile Sean is angry with Winston and says that he no longer has any interest in helping Winston win. Sean wants Winston to listen to a few of his ideas and suggestions. They glance out the window and see that Alex caught up to them and that they are willing to work together.
Leigh is still unconvinced that God is speaking to Susan but all she wants is a sign and she soon gets it as Rob and Ellie go flying past them the other way. Ivy still has the gun pointed at Wendy and she is angry that Wendy wants to just quit. Wendy says that if she can't turn around then Ivy should just shoot her because she won't be any good at the game. After pointing out that Wendy wasn't good at it in the first place, Ivy refuses to let Wendy quit. Wendy offers to give her money, credit cards, even her car if Ivy will just let her quit. Ivy then admits that she needs Wendy because she doesn't know how to drive. Rob is furious at Ellie for not telling him about the other soldiers looking for him. He informs her that the punishment for going AWOL in time of war is death. Ellie suggests they win the race and use the money to run away and hide but Rob says that he could never desert. Ellie beaks down and tells him that she would rather run away and hide with him then have him die in Iraq. Rob is so angry with Ellie that he throws their race phone out the window. Susan stops to pick up the phone saying "We are going to win this race." In a coffee shop Alex, Winston, Corinna, and Sean meet to discuss how they will rob the bank. Winston suggests a full on assault while Alex says he will only attack at night. Sean, quietly thinking, realizes that he has solved the clue. "Surrender, America" refers to the courthouse where General Lee surrendered to General Grant in Appomattox, VA. Sean then says that getting into the vault will be easy, the just need the 6 digit code that the manager uses and it should be stored on his computer. Susan, meanwhile, is trying to convince Leigh that seeing another racers car and finding the phone are not luck but a part of God's plan. While arguing that they should turn around Leigh realizes what "Surrender, America" means. They celebrate with a high five and a smile saying "Everything has meaning. There are no accidents," while right behind them a very large truck is approaching their car very quickly. The truck rear ends them and continues to hit them until Susan loses control of the wheel and the car fishtails off of the road.
Winston, Sean, and Corinna successfully break into the bank. Winston disarms the alarm and Sean starts to hack into the manager's computer to find the code to the vault. While Alex is waiting in the car, he is once again visited by Kathryn who thanks him for doing what he can to save her and to not lose focus of why he is competing in the race. A security guard pulls up next to the bank and looks around. He sees nothing and starts to return to his vehicle but at the last second decides to check inside the bank. Sean deciphers the code and Winston and Corinna open the vault and remove the safety deposit box as the guard comes in and discovers what they are up to. Startled, the gang can only stare as the security guard taunts them but he is soon surprised by Alex who tackles him. A shot rings out but no one pays much attention as they try to take down the guard. The guard however is soon brought down when Sean shoots him using a gun he took from home. They all run out of the bank and once outside Sean reveals that he has been shot. Alex zooms out of the parking lot.
Waking up from the wreck, a disoriented Leigh tries to figure out what has happened. Reality quickly sets in as she discovers Susan is trapped inside the car. Susan is conscious but Leigh realizes there is no way she can get her out. Susan reveals that the message she heard from God was not meant for her, but for Leigh "YOU will win this race" she says and we realize that every time Susan has said this, she has been looking at Leigh. Tragically Susan dies and Leigh is left stranded and now alone. Leigh makes her way to the highway and hitches a ride with a man who agrees to take her to Appomattox. Alex is speeding now more than ever trying to save Sean's life. Alex (and Winston who has been following in his car) pulls off at a motel and orders Corinna and Winston to stay there while he takes Sean to find him some help.
