  • A welcome return of favourite characters.

After a two-year hiatus DTDD returned to a whole new world. Britain was being ruled by a Labour government, Princess Diana's story had had a tragic ending and television was changing rapidly into today's multi-channel, reality-show-driven monster. The first episode of this series tried to tackle these changes by being a bit different itself. Rather than a traditional sitcom episode, it was a fake documentary. (Did Ricky Gervais see this one before creating The Office?) All the favourite characters are still there. George hasn't changed one bit, Henry is still bitter, Joy as merciless as ever. Sally seems to have grown a few more brain cells, but she remains the humorless queen of superficiality. The fact that the writers could make jokes about Princess Diana only one year after her death, is quite astonishing. (But then again, it is the only reference to "current" affairs. Gone are the quips about recent political events.) The characters of Dave and Damien seem to be a little underused, but that might be due to the workload of the actors, both of whom had other big series going on that year as well.moreless
