  • Things turn even bleaker for the characters of Durham County. Ms. Lacroix's body is found, Traci leaves Ray, and the Sweeney household is very tense and seems to be starting to come apart.moreless

Nothing pivotal happened in this episode, but it seemed to set up a lot for episodes to come. It was a bit dry, and not quite as weird as the first episode, but it maintained its bleak, grey quality. The episode was mostly set up and character development. The killer with the accent was reintroduced in a clever way, and the evidence (like the picnic basket...) came up in some nerve-wracking ways, as well. The character development left me wondering who to root for. Mike, who appeared at first to be the good guy, has proved himself to be somewhat corrupt as an officer, as well as being an adulterer, and in addition, in this episode, he was very hard on both of his daughters, without cause. He seems to have a quick temper, and not much compassion or willingness to listen. Basically, his one major good point is that he is not (so far) a murderer.

Ray seems to be descending further into madness. His character is completely unlikable and bizarre, like a spoiled and violent child. The other characters, on the other hand, are becoming more and more sympathetic by comparason, particularly their children, who are dealing with, as best they can, home lives that seem to be crumbling. There is a sense of desperation that all the main characters seem to possess. It is only the second installment, but it seems clear that everything is on a downward spiral. While it was a bit slow, I thought it was generally pretty good, and seemingly integral to the overarching plot development.moreless
