Jimmy trains Rolf with the book, "Baby's first word's".
Look Closely: In the hall, when Nazz & Kevin are walking (after Jonny pulls out his net), a poster says:
No Rough Housing. We don't want a lawsuit.
Jimmy's math problem was too advanced for his age. You normally don't start Algebraic expressions until sixth grade, which Jimmy or Sarah can't be because the Eds are in sixth grade, shown from their report cars in "Mission Ed-possible". Is Jimmy smarter than his age group?
Reply: Possibly.
When Edd is getting into bed after the spelling bee, there are seven ribbons on his wall from winning the Peach Creek Spelling Bee. Since Jr. High is only three years long and he has seven ribbons from that school, wouldn't hat mean he has been in Jr. High for seven years?
Response: Perhaps this is a nod to the fact that in the 8 years of the show, the Eds haven't aged at all.
The bet between Eddy and Kevin was that Ed would win in the third round, but Ed won in the second round and Eddy still won the bet.
Reply: The spelling bee was over so there would be no third round.
Edd Gravy, G-R-A-V-I. Y! Y is what I ment to say.
Nazz Sorry Double-D, you know the rules. Over to you, Ed!
Ed (puts Edd aside) Gravy. G-R-A-V-Y. Gravy. Yum!
Jonny: (to Nazz) You wanna hold hands?
Nazz: Ew! In your dreams!
Jonny: What? You hate bald kids to?!
Ed: Cookies at my house Double D! With lots of mayonnaise.
Rolf: (on the microphone) Rolf's mind gone blank.
Jimmy: I can't feel my toes, Rolf!
Ed: Gravy, G-R-A-V-Y, gravy. Yum!
Edd: Gravy, G-R-A-V-I Gravy. I mean Y.
Ed: Ectoplasm. E-C-T-O-P-L-A-S-M. Ectoplasm.
Nazz: Next, is Rolf. And your word is... (Trying to say Colonial) Co-lon-i
Edd: Colonial.
Nazz: Right on, Double-D.
Rolf: (Steps up to Mic; begins to breathe heavily) Rolf's mind goes blanks. (Breathes heavily) Colonial. (Breathes heavily) POPPY COCK! Curse this monkey ritual of English language! (Knocks over mic; someone in audience claps) Thank you, Nana. (Rolf runs off stage)
This is the first time we hear Rolf's Nana.
The silhouettes of adults are seen applauding the spelling bee contestants in this episode.
Each spelling bee contestant's first words had something to do with the character's personality. For example, Ed's first word is "ectoplasm", which has to do with the ghosts and monsters in horror movies he watches.
Running gag(s): 1) Jonny trying to get back at Nazz for disqualifying Plank from the spelling bee. 2) People paying "Egghead Ed" to help them.
Look Hard: As all the cul-de-sac kids showed their flunked papers to Eddy, Jimmy's paper said this:
Q: What does happy mean
(x)A: Popeye The Sailor
This is an Obvious reference to the old Popeye the Sailor MGM shorts.
Episode: Title Pun
The episode is a reference to the old saying, "He's too smart for his own good."
