Edward and Mrs Simpson

Show Summary

This old British mini-series, which has a total length of six hours, was made in 1978 and is the true story of the Abdication Crisis of 1936. Britain's Prince of Wales (played by Edward Fox) falls in love with Wallis Simpson (Cynthia Harris), a married American believed to have had affairs with several other men. Then the Prince's father, King George V, dies, and the uncrowned new monarch, now King Edward VIII, fights the politicians and bishops of the United Kingdom and the rest of the British Empire over his plans to marry Wallis - who is now his mistress and has successfully divorced her second husband, Ernest Simpson. The King's allies in this real-life drama include Winston Churchill and Walter Monckton, while his chief enemies are Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin and The Archbishop of Canterbury. The whole of Edward and Mrs Simpson is available on DVD and VHS, and it is still sometimes broadcast around the world. The series arrived on screens in the U.S. in 1980 and was first available on videotape in 1981, which is why it is sometimes given those later (but incorrect) dates. The theme song, 'I've Danced with a Man who's Danced with a Girl who's Danced with the Prince of Wales', dates from the 1920s.moreless
