Ernie, back from college with a "preppy" look, visits Tommy for spring break. Tommy's auditioning to become lead guitarist for a house band at BJ's Nightclub. When they eat at their old restaurant, they run into Jill, Tommy's old girlfriend. When Jill picks Ernie over Tommy, he loses confidence in himself. So after getting into an argument with Tom, he heads over to David's for support. But David tells him that living in the past isn't the real world.
David moves into a singles-only apartment building. But David's depressed about his new surroundings and Tommy helps him realize the past isn't the real world as well.
Upset by Tom's refusal to give him money, he tells Nicholas to get a job. So he and Jeremy found a job delivering newspapers for the rival Tribune! But when Nicholas and Jeremy catch the flu, it's Tom that has to deliver the papers. Unfortunately, he runs into Elliot! Tom makes them quit the Tribune and start delivering for the Register early in the morning.
Tommy ends up getting that job as lead guitarist at the nightclub.
