Eleventh Hour

Season 1 Episode 14

Aired Thursday 10:00 PM Feb 19, 2009 on CBS

  • Trivia

    • Hood: That's liquid mercury.
Goof: Mercury is only found in liquid form. It's one of the six elements that are liquid at room temperature and pressure. It can't be found in nature in any other state.

    • Minamata disease is a neurological syndrome caused by severe mercury poisoning. Its symptoms are numbness in hands and feet, muscle weakness and narrowing of the field of vision. It was first discovered in Minamata City, Japan in 1956. It was caused by the release of methyl mercury by a chemical factory. The metal accumulated in the fish and shellfish in Minamata Bay and when it was eaten by the locals it resulted in mercury poisoning. More than 1,700 people died.

    • Goof: The group dons gas masks when opening the suspect late-model refrigerator from the bottom of the lake but did nothing to isolate it when it was opened, resulting in a mercury spill on the dock.

    • Goof: At the end of the episode, Dr. Hood says that the lake would soon enough cleanse itself of the mercury contamination; in fact the effects from heavy metal contamination would remain for quite some time.

  • Quotes

    • Hood: Liquid mercury is classified as a hazardous material.
Rachel: So if you want to buy this much of it without a license you...
Hood: Just get a truck loaded with mercury from someone that takes some cash...
Rachel: From a dealer who doesn't ask too many questions.
      Hood: Exactly.
      Felix: Ooohh, yeah, wow!

    • Ben: I did what I thought was right. When there's no fish and no forests, you'll wish you hadn't stopped me.
Rachel: You killed someone. I'm not sorry I stopped you.

    • Hood: I don't really like fish. You know that Three Stooges movie with Curly? Swallows that fish whole and in the x-ray you can see it swimming round his ribs? Freaked me out.

    • Lee: You know, contrary to popular belief, cows do not have four stomachs. They do have four digestive compartments.
      Rachel: Girls must love you.
      Lee: I do alright.

    • Lee: Dr. Hood, you're wondering why the Director would burn you with some rookie agent at the head of a key serious case.
      Hood: Well, why would he?
Lee: Funny you should ask. I know I don't have much field experience. And science -- not exactly M.I.T. The whole tactical training bit wasn't really my bag.
Rachel: So what do you do?
Lee: Recon. I'd have to say, recon. It's easy for me, because I'm real good at blending in. Like a mouse.
Hood: A six foot six mouse.
      Lee: Exactly.

    • Lee: You know that, when you're behind the desk, the victim's just a name on the computer. Out here is different. How do you deal with people who have lost so much?
Hood: To tell you the truth Felix, I haven't really worked that one out yet.

    • Rachel: Hood, you can tell your friends at the science community that immersive garbology sucks.

    • Erica: Can I ask you something?
      Hood: Sure, anything.
Erica: What would you do? If it were your wife?
Hood: If it were my wife? Um... I don't wanna... I think I'd say to hell with the science, just go with your heart.

    • Lee: Isn't mercury used in thermometers?
Hood: Used to be, they don't use mercury anymore.
Lee: Pretty sure as a kid, my momma put those things up places mercury definitely should not go.
