In the English dub, when the two girls are talking to Kisaragi in the kitchen, one of them calls her "Kisagari" by mistake.
The Head Restraints worn by Lucy when she was shot by the sniper was made into an item named "4x Helm" on Gaia Online.
Elfen Lied means "Elf Song" in German and Dutch, but the spelling in German would be "Elfenlied", pronounced [ˈɛlfən liːt].
In the manga, Diclonius are never stated to have a limited amount of vectors. However, it depicts Lucy having over twelve vectors, Nana possessing approximately six vectors, and Mariko controlling up to fifty vectors. They are rarely shown being physically attached to the body (the anime shows them extending from the back, while the manga has them simply appear levitating).
In the manga, Lucy/Nyuu was originally meant to have lighter pink hair and emerald green eyes. In the finished, colored versions, however, it became the dark pink hair-dark pink eyes combo.
In the manga, Lucy is depicted even more sadistic and murderous. She actually enjoys inflicting both physical and emotional pain on her victims and aggressors.
(Next Episode Preview) Narrator: The hunter, the hunted. The situation takes a sudden turn, and is reversed. Pure action led by unwavering instinct. A purity that exists to please. Next time on Elfen Lied, episode two: Cleaning Up.
(after a long description on how the seashell was a gift from Kohta's sister, Nyuu breaks the seashell) Kohta: What the hell are you doing? Didn't I just say it was a memento from my sister?!
The mouth of the Just shall meditate wisdom And his tongue shall speak judgement Blessed is the man who endureth temptation For once he hath been proven, he shall receive the crown of life Lord, Fire Divine, have mercy O how holy, how serene, how benevolent How lovely, O lily of purity
(About Nyuu and the seashell) Kouta: What the hell was she thinking? Yuka: It was probably because...you were...looking so sad. She must have thought that seashell was something bad. You always get sad when you think of Kanae, Kouta. Don't you think that makes Kanae sad too?
(refering to gun shooting practice) Bando: What's the point in shooting if they don't scream or bleed? This is pointless! I should be doing this with real people!
Kouta: Is this the house you're lending me? Yuka: It used to be an inn, but it is not in business anymore. Mom said that cleaning it everyday will be enough. Kouta: Umm, one thing... Yuka: What? Kouta: How many rooms are in this place? Yuka: Hmm, I think there are ten... Kouta: And I have to clean them all by myself? Yuka: The garden too. Kouta: So what you're saying is that I've become the inn's caretaker? Yuka: Hmm, well...
International Airdate: - Denmark: May 6, 2008 on Anime TV
In the very first scenes, when Lucy goes through the empty hall, we can hear her singing Lilium.
"Begegnung" is German for "Meeting"
General Note on Airdates: The airdates for this guide are the Japanese airdates. Elfen Lied does not air on American TV, except for on ADV's the Anime Network (TAN). Furthermore, it will most likely never air on general cable TV due to the extreme violence and nudity.
Lucy never actually refers to herself as such. This name was probably given to her by the Director. A possible reason why he chose Lucy may be because,in real life, the human bones that were found that traced the farthest back to the first human was decreed "Lucy".
Nyuu resembles Chii from Chobits. In Chobits, Hikedi found a persocom and took her home. When he got her running, the persocom was innocent and child-like, and could only say one thing, "Chii". Hideki named her "Chii" because of that. Sound familar?
Yuka: I brought onigri. Onigri are riceballs wrapped in seaweed.
About the memorial stones shown about halfway through the episode; believers of the Koushin pray there for health and prosperity on one night that occurs once every 60 years.
The images of the opening theme are images from the paintings of Gustav Klimt (1862-1918). Most are from his most famous painting, "The Kiss" (1907-1908).
The text of the opening theme is "Beatus vir", an excerpt from the Latin Vulgate edition of the Bible. The passage is from James 1: "Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him."
The opening theme's lyrics include: Psalm 36:30 - "Os iusti meditabitur sapientiam et lingua eius loquetur iudicium" or "The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom: and his tongue shall speak judgment" "Kyrie Fons Bonitatis" (also known as the trope chant) - "Kyrie, ignis divine, pectora nostra succende, ut digni pariter proclamare possimus semper, eleison" or "Lord, divine fire, inflame our hearts, so that together we may worthily proclaim forever: have mercy" "Ave Mundi Spes Maria" (also known as the medieval sequence hymn) - "Oh, quam sancta, quam serena, quam benigna, quam amoena esse virgo creditur" or "Oh how holy, how serene, how benign, how delightful is this maiden who believed!" All three pieces can be found in the album "Chant" by the famous Benedictine Monks of the Santo Domingo de Silos Monastery.
