Mayu's tragic past is revealed. She remembers back to when she ran away from home. At school, Yuka and Kouta's new professor is none other than Yu Kakuzawa, Chief Kakuzawa's son. He instantly notices Nyuu as Lucy and tricks Kouta into handing her over to him. Will Nyuu be safe in the hands of Yu? Or rather, will Yu be safe when Lucy awakens?!moreless
  • There are no Diclonius in RL. But there are all too many Mayus...

What is the coldest moment in all of Elfen Lied? Lucy vs. Nana? Kisaragi? Kanae? The puppy? The blood Kurama willingly takes onto his own hands? For me personally, these are all eclipsed by Mayu's backstory, revealed in this heart-wrenching episode.
Her stepfather's crime is horrendous, yet it is her own mother who invites this predator into their lives, and who somehow fails to ever catch her barfly prize abusing her daughter. Mayu's mother is the embodiment of the joke about licensing people before they can become parents. Does she disbelieve Mayu when told the truth? Does she urge her to put up with it, with a vague promise that things will get better? No--she slaps her pre-teen daughter and treats her like a sexual competitor, angry over the 'attention' she is getting. The stepfather is a monster, but a comprehensible one. Not so for Mayu's mother, and we all know there are too many like her in RL and not enough Yukas and Koutas to take in all the Mayus. The second coldest scene in this episode (though not second for the series) comes when the woman on the beach claims (I have my doubts) that Wanta is really her dog, and warns Mayu from seeing him again. Happily, the dog is smart and ditches this witch, and we get to see Mayu happy in Maple House, even as the menacing Professor Kakuzawa gets his hands on the innocent Nyu--just not for very long. Just remember, her supposedly unpunished parents were still stuck with each other, while Mayu got a better--if quirky--family, so there is some justice.moreless
  • We need something traumatic, cue the child-molesting step father.

    8.7
    "Great"
Human beings always have a reason for doing what they do, thinking what they think, and fearing what they fear. Nothing is completely irrational; there is always something, or several somethings that add up, that causes certain behaviors. This episode showcases the darker side of human nature, revealing just why a 13 year old girl is living alone on the beach. While the physical act of it is disturbing, the truly disgusting thing about it is that it actually happens, and lot more than the media lets on.

This episode was extremely realistic in portraying human behavior, though it didn't progress the plot much at all. 9/10.moreless

    • In the manga, the Diclonius virus is explained in greater detail with moments such as Professor Kakuzawa explaining the half-Diclonius status and ancestry of he and his father to Lucy before she kills him. After he is killed, Lucy tells his corpse that Diclonius are not a different species, but humans like everyone else - just born with horns and a unique power. One might say the term "Diclonius" was invented by Kakuzawa in order to separate them from their fellow humans.

    • (Next Episode Preview) Narrator: Anxiety and relief. Suffering and gentleness. Uncessant overflowing mixed feelings. A contradiction in quality, only one thing can have that meaning. Comprising of memories of past times that are washed by the pouring rain. Memories that, before long, will quietly be washed away. Next time on Elfen Lied, episode six: Inner Feelings.

    • Lucy: (To Professor Kakusawa) You're a foolish monkey.

    • Yuka: Idiot! What are you crying for? You're a man, aren't you?

    • Yuka: Come on, come on, we've got to get to class. Hurry up and get ready. (Kouta falls asleep. Then Yuka stomps on his head.) Kouta: Ok, ok, ok!

    • Mayu's stepfather: (to Mayu) Hurry up and take off your clothes. (Mayu takes off her clothes) Good girl.

    • Yuka: Hey, Kouta. If I were to disappear...would you cry like you did before?

    • (Kouta goes to leave) Nyuu: Kouta! (Yuka looks at Nyuu in shock) Nyuu: Kouta! Kouta! Kouta! Kouta! (Kouta leaves) Nyuu: KOUTA!

    • Professor: Why did Miller use a tungsten electrode? Student: I don't know. Professor: Then someone else...Does anyone else know? Nyuu: Yes!

    • Mayu: Even when I'm not sad...tears...just come out.

    • (Nyuu comes in with a big bowl of rice for Mayu's birthday) Kouta: What's that? Yuka: Ah...Mayu looked so happy eating rice yesterday... (Mayu looks at Nyuu, who then nods.) Kouta: She has her own way of interpreting things

    • Man: (talking about Mayu) Do you people know her? Kouta: Yes! She's our family. Man: Family? Yuka and Kouta: Yes! Kouta: We had a little fight... Everyone in our family tends to blow their top a bit easy... (Yuka gives Kouta a dirty look) Kouta: Alright, time to go home!

    • Mayu: (Wanta is taken away by her owner) Good for you. You'll be able to eat a lot of delicious things from now on! Thank goodness...right?

    • Mayu(to Wanta):You're alone too... Were you thown out? Then we're alike.

    • Nyuu: Nyuu...? *Taps gong of grandfather clock* Nyuu!

    • (talking about Mayu) Kouta: Returning her to her own home would probably be the first choice. Yuka:What are you talking about? She left because she didn't want to go back!

    • Mayu's note upon leaving: I apologize for all the trouble I've caused. The food was delicious. I'm sure I must have been a bother to you. I will surely someday pay back the hospital fee that I owe you. I'm sorry I left without saying goodbye. -Mayu

    • Director Kurama: People who... think they can make up their past follies with regret can not be forgiven.

    • Mayu's stepfather: Good girl

    • Mayu: No... I won't do this anymore!
