Episode Recap

Eli stops at a newsstand to get a paper and the owner, Hank, gives him a hard time about not knowing anything about his personal life. As he talks, Eli has a vision of himself at a street rally for "Live Brave." A distinguished black man, David Mosely, gets up at the podium. Eli talks to Chen about it and the doctor recommends he find out if Mosely exists. He asks Patti to run a search but Patti is watching Internet video of a chimpanzee. It turns out that the chimp, Steve, is separated from his male partner Pete because of right-wing protestors. Patti insists that Eli take the case in return for her finding Mosely.

Jordan is having his briefing with Marci Klein, one of the senior partners, arrives. She asks Eli about his aneurysm and then interrupts Jordan's group meeting. Afterward, Matt asks Eli for tips on getting together with Taylor, and Eli suggests Taylor likes chimps and redirects Matt to take the case. Patti has found 53 Moselys and he realizes which one he's looking for: a prisoner that Keith Bennett had as a client. Eli asks Keith along but he doesn't know what's happened to him and isn't interested in going along. Eli goes to the prison and confirms that David Mosely the prisoner is the man from his vision. Mosely needs a lawyer since his accomplices testified he was at the robbery where a man was killed. However, he's more concerned that he can't receive a parole request due to disciplinary problems: he led a hunger strike against overcrowding and it wasn't appreciated. He says that people have to "live brave," echoing the posters and chants in Eli's vision.

Eli goes to see Keith and tell him he's getting Mosely a parole hearing. Keith doesn't believe that Mosely is innocent but Eli asks for his help on criminal rights.

Marci tries to make small talk with Jordan but he asks to know what she's there for. She notes that revenues have been in decline and wants to know about Eli. She isn't happy that he's been using his talents to sue the firm and feels it's symptomatic.

Matt brings Taylor into the conference room and finds herself face-to-face with Steve the chimpanzee. Matt is surprised to learn she doesn't love animals.

Eli and Keith meet with Warden Brown who isn't sympathetic. Eli promises to get a hearing before a judge but Brown isn't impressed.

Taylor confronts Eli over the fact he lied to Matt, and she decides to continue working with Matt to make Eli jealous. They get a call from the prison and find Mosely in the infirmary: the warden's had him beaten. Eli and Keith turn it into a class action suit and pull in the associates. When Marci finds out about it, she has to let them do it… but refuses to grant them billable time on the project. Only Maggie agrees to help.

Taylor and Matt go to court and Matt surprises with a case on chimpanzee tort that makes the case that legal protections should be extended to primates. The judge agrees to hear oral arguments.

Eli and Maggie are going over the case when her fiancé Scott calls. She doesn't talk to him long and Eli wonders if she got engaged as a reaction to them kissing. Meanwhile, Keith talks to other prisoners to get their testimony, and Mosely comes in. It turns out that once Mosely refused to plead because he insisted he was innocent, Keith abandoned him. Mosely has no choice but to accept Keith's help and the prisoner relates how the warden transformed him to the Aryan wing section after medical treatment for his cellmate was refused.

Patti visits Matt and Taylor and says that Steve is getting sicker, and Matt realizes that Taylor took the case to make Eli jealous. An angry Patti refuses to let them leave until they complete the case.

As Eli escorts Maggie to his car, he has another vision of Mosely at a rally, where he thanks a Daryl Rhodes, as well as Keith and Eli. Eli sees a future Eli and Keith there, and Maggie… with a child and standing next to his future self.

The next day, Steve's handler Dr. Maxford speaks on his behalf about how he bonded with Pete. The chimpanzee touches Taylor, who reminds him of his mother, and Taylor is touched. Prosecuting attorney Cathy Borilla takes the offensive, noting that Pete bit her and she didn't file assault charges. Therefore Pete shouldn't receive any other legal consideration.

Eli and Keith go before the judge but one of the witnesses, Calderon, reverses his testimony. Eli and Keith realize they're in trouble since none of the other witnesses will stand by their earlier testimony. Keith talks to Mosely in private and apologizes for not giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Eli is trying to locate the Daryl Rhodes from his vision and tells Maggie to go home. He suggests he might be coming between her and her boyfriend, based on his vision. She reluctantly leaves, clearly upset. However, she returns later with help: all of the associates. The next day in court, Eli calls a new witness: Daryl Rhodes. Rhodes is an administrative assistant who resigned due to guilt because the warden had him transfer prisoners to hostile sections if they protested their abusive treatment.

Taylor and Matt call Pete the Chimp to the stand and show him a photo of Steve. Pete embraces it and it's clear he misses his mate. They bring in Steve and the two monkeys embrace. The judge is reluctant to create new law and warns it could be overturned… but they'll be together until then. She rules in favor of the plaintiff.

The warden's lawyer makes an offer and Eli bargains for money to deal with the problems and a guarantee parole hearing for Mosely. Eli also demands that Brown be fired as all of the reform is pointless if Brown is still in charge, and they'll press criminal charges if he doesn't resign.

Later, Jordan congratulates Eli on the settlement and dismisses his concerns about the trouble Eli may have put him in with Marci. She comes in and congratulates Eli on his moral victory, but notes they've lost five other major clients. She informs him that the governor denied Mosely's parole, and he's left to wonder if she had something to do with it. She announces that she's taken over two offices and will be present for the duration.

At the prison, Keith meets with Mosely and wonders how he can keep going on. Mosely says that's what "living brave" is all about and thanks Keith for coming through for him. Keith offers to help put him through a correspondence course with law and Mosely agrees.

Taylor, Matt, and Patti go to a private chimpanzee preserve where Pete and Steve "thank" them. As they go inside, Taylor finally gives in and says that if Matt can get them into an exclusive restaurant, she'll go out with him.

At the office that night, Maggie talks with Eli who admits that it didn't turn out like he expected with Mosely. As Eli heads home, he has another vision of Mosely in the future, praising him. Eli sees his future self kissing Maggie and his son as he's called upon to speak: the rally is for him.
