Eli is in the office chatting with Keith and then gets into the elevator with two women. He emerges to find himself at a vineyard with dancers. He wakes up to find himself in a hospital with Nathan and Dr. Chen. The ERI reveals he's has a second aneurysm at the base of the brain. Eli wonders if his visits to Dr. Lee have caused the second aneurysm, and insists that they're done with seeing her. Nathan is surprised to hear all this, since they haven't told him about Dr. Lee.
Taylor and Matt are checking out spas and trying to find a way to get away by themselves for a while. Matt finally agrees despite the expense. He gets a call about the settlement in the Russell vs. Bay West case falling apart and heads to the office.
Eli and Taylor both arrive late to the emergency meeting that Jordan has called… concerning the Russell vs. Bay West case. Apparently a whistleblower has turned up, convincing Russell to pursue his case.
Matt and Maggie arrive at the office and Paul Rollins tells them that Russell has turned up a witness in his behalf, Jesse Bates, his news director, who has turned up in a public record search. She's in a jail in Sonoma, CA. Matt is reluctant to go because of his getaway trip with Taylor, but Rollins doesn't give him a choice.
Jordan approaches Taylor about going to a zoo benefit dinner with him now that he's divorced, but she says she'd rather go to Sonoma with Eli to have a chance to be with Matt. They all end up riding together, although neither Eli nor Maggie are too thrilled with the idea. As they drive, Matt makes plans to get alone with Taylor, but seems reluctant to be in Sonoma. Maggie wants an apology from Eli for his accusations that she sabotaged his relationship with another woman. Eli finally apologizes to her and admits he messed up the relationship on his own.
Nathan visits Frank at his shop and wants to know about Dr. Lee. Frank says it's nothing to worry about but Nathan doesn't believe him and threatens to reveal that Frank kept a copy of their father's journal. Frank refuses to back down, warning that the knowledge would hurt Eli, and Nathan reluctantly leaves.
Matt and Taylor check in at the hotel together, and Eli heads immediately for the sheriff's department, managing to get the car keys. He refuses to give Maggie a ride and takes off. Meanwhile, Matt notices a woman as he's walking down the street and tries to avoid her. She notices him and comes over, and the woman, Leigh Rappaport, admits that she and Matt dated. After she leaves, Matt admits that he thought she might have some hard feelings toward him.
Eli talks to the desk sergeant and Maggie arrives before he can learn anything. Taylor and Matt arrive a minute later and they all introduce themselves as attorneys. He brings in Jesse, the newscaster that worked with Russell. The lawyers spar over getting her to help them, and Jesse admits she opened up an art gallery. It turns out that the Danvers gave her a Moreau painting stolen by the Nazis 75 years ago, and she refused to give it back to the sellers, so she's being held in civil contempt. Jesse figures that whichever lawyer manages to get her out of jail is good enough to take her side of the Russell case.
At the hotel pool, Eli, Matt, and Maggie argue the legal matters. Taylor arrives and reveals the spa is closed. Matt volunteers to be first chair but Eli and Maggie spend their time arguing. Taylor tells them to settle the matter with rock-scissors-paper. Matt wins and they head into court. It turns out Leigh is the judge, much to Matt's surprise. She makes it clear to the prosecuting attorney Donnie that she knew Matt in college. Matt tries to make his case but Leigh refuses to grant his motions to dismiss. Eli wonders what Matt did to Leigh.
Nathan goes to see Dr. Lee and asks about the Dark Ritual. She knows who he is from what Eli has said and tells him to leave.
Jordan is trying to change his dinner reservation at the charity event when Patti comes in. She explains she's been making amends and insists she's been treating him badly behind his back. She reveals that she didn't put a client through to him and didn't make dinner reservations for him, and was punishing him because he knew her secret. Jordan agrees to forgive her… as long as she goes with him to the dinner.
The sellers testify and Leigh continues to shut down Matt. He wonders if she's taking things personally and Leigh reveals Matt abandoned her at the airport on the way to their graduation vacation, and then broke up with her by e-mail. She holds him in contempt and has him locked up.
Eli and Maggie play again for first chair and Eli wins. Taylor is worried about the information she's learned about Matt's lack of commitment and walks off. Eli takes aspirin for his headache and Maggie notices, and then they go back to the case. Maggie suggests they find the granddaughter of the original owner, Katie Bochner, who is vacationing in Tahiti. However, she warns that under the statute of limitation the current owners don't have to return it no matter what. Eli compliments her and they decide to stall and hope that the D.A. doesn't know the statute.
Jesse testifies about how she determined the painting was stolen and she's trying to contact the granddaughter. The prosecuting attorney brings up the matter of statutes and Judge Leigh asks for proof that the painting is stolen. Taylor jumps in and wonders why she's cross-examining witnesses. Leigh warns her but Taylor refuses to listen and ends up in a cell next to Matt.
Jordan and Patti arrive at the charity and they're both glad to be out of the house and not alone. However, Jordan discovers that Ellen is there as well and things get tense when she reveals she's there with a friend of Jordan's. Patti confronts Ellen and asks why she didn't give Jordan a heads-up, and then insults her. Jordan offers to take her to dinner… somewhere else.
That night, Maggie and Eli discuss the case and finish off a bottle of wine. Maggie compliments Eli and they remember their past when they worked together. However, Maggie reveals that unknown to Eli, they met at law school. She was second-year and saw Eli at a dinner where he gave a speech. They didn't talk at the dinner but they met later at a karaoke bar. She turns on some music and tries to get him to sing. They get close and then kiss.
In jail, Taylor says she can live with his baggage as long as he doesn't bring it up. In response, Matt points out that the fact she's still working with Eli, her ex-fiancé, bothers him. Taylor admits she thought Eli was the love of his life, but she was wrong. They reach out and hold hands.
Eli and Maggie end up in bed, but Eli wonders what they're doing. She insists she doesn't need him protecting her and asks where he wants to be. Eli admits he wants to be there with her and they proceed.
Nathan goes to see Frank, who has refused to take his calls. He wants Frank to tell him what was in the journal. When Frank refuses, Nathan wants to know about the Dark Ritual. Frank admits he's only done it twice: the first time was on Nathan's father when he was hearing voices. The Dark Ritual helped at first but then Nathan's father died a week later.
Jordan and Patti eat at a diner and Patti wonders why Jordan didn't challenge Ellen for walking all over him. Jordan insists he's doing penance for cheating on his first wife, Susan, and blamed Susan for the affair. Patti doesn't believe it and says he needs to make amends.
The next morning, Eli wakes up in bed next to Maggie. She wakes up and he fakes being asleep. Maggie realizes he's faking and asks why. Eli admits he's been dishonest and explains that he has a second aneurysm, and he was eager to get out of town for a change of scenery. Before he can explain further, Maggie's phone rings: they've found Katie Bochner. Thinking he used her to help cope with his aneurysm, she doesn't want to talk about what's between them any further and leaves.
Katie explains how her grandfather escaped Nazi Germany but her grandmother was killed and the painting was stolen. Eli shows her the painting and Katie remembers how the painting was priceless to her grandfather because it reminded her of the wife. Katie reveals that she's wearing her grandmother's necklace: the same one in the painting. Leigh reveals she discovered the precedent on statutes and has no choice but to leave it with the Danvers, but Katie says she doesn't want the painting. Her family is dead and the painting won't bring her grandmother back. She asks Danvers to sell it to a museum so that she can visit it once in a while, and Danvers agrees.
Leigh has Matt and Taylor released and admits she may have gotten carried away. Taylor prods Matt into apologizing and Leigh accepts.
As Jesse is released, she admits that she's happy how the case worked out. She reveals to Eli that she has nothing to say on the Russell case, but gave all her related e-mails from the company to Maggie earlier that morning. Eli realizes that Maggie has already headed back to San Francisco.
As Eli, Taylor, and Matt drive home, Eli tries to get hold of Maggie on the phone. Maggie is back at her office, ignoring Eli's calls.
Jordan is leaving for the day, considers his phone, and then calls his ex-wife Susan.
At his home, Eli is leaving another message for Maggie when Nathan and Frank arrive. Frank tells Eli he kept a copy of his father's journal to protect him, and Nathan agrees he was right to do so. They tell him the whole truth, that Frank's use of the Dark Ritual may have killed their father. Upset, Eli tells them both to get out.
