Eli is unable to return the engagement ring he bought for Taylor since he didn't keep the receipt. That night Nate calls Eli at home where he's eating popcorn and watching TV. Eli tries to convince himself that Taylor is better off without her but Nate tells him it should be up to her to decide. As Nate hangs up, Eli hears a voice from the TV say "Help me, Stone." He sees a man on the TV and tries to turn it off by remote without success. He turns off the TV manually but the man appears in the room and says the same thing, startling Eli.
The next day, Eli goes to Chen who suggests that the vision is a "holding" vision and that Eli is going to have to wait and see.
Jordan meets with an old friend, Mason Andrews, a fellow lawyer. Mason was at the engagement party when Eli went nuts and they make small talk about Taylor. Mason then gets down to business and asks Jordan to represent him as outside counsel. A lawyer he interviewed but refused to hire is suing him for discriminatory hiring practices. Mason finally admits that the lawyer is black.
Eli goes to the office and finds Maggie and Patti waiting for him. Patti is happy about the news that he's broken up with Taylor, having heard it from the office gossip. Eli is concerned that Jordan might have learned about it and asks Patti to check with Taylor's assistant. Patti refuses and reminds him about the staff meeting. Eli goes in and sits next to Jordan, who is abrupt with Eli. They discuss Mason's case and everyone volunteers to take second chair except for Eli. Jordan wonders at that but Eli is stunned to see the man from his vision sitting in Postner's chair, talking with Postner's voice. The man then takes over Matt's sea. An upset Eli slips off complaining about a stomach condition, and goes to Nate for medication. Eli barges in and Nate introduces him to the patient, Jake McCann: the man from Eli's vision.
Later, Eli talks with Nate and tries to find out about Jake. Nate explains that Jake was in a coma after falling off of a roof while working on gutters, and has no legal problems. Eli asks Nate to see if Jake has any legal problems but Nate is wary about getting involved.
Jordan and Matt meet with Keith Bennett, the man suing Mason's firm. Keith is representing himself and isn't impressed with Jordan's legal acumen. Matt wonders why Keith is suing, given that he's making himself unemployable, and Keith notes that Mason was prejudiced against him because of his appearance and seeming lack of wealth, rather than his skin color. Keith refuses to settle despite Jordan's advice and tells them to inform him when the case comes to trial.
Eli bugs Patti about what she's found out about Jordan, and Taylor shows up, irritated at Eli for going behind her back. She tells him she'll be stopping by in a few days to get her stuff from his apartment, and he doesn't need to be there if he doesn't want to be. Eli admits he feels awful but Taylor notes that she feels even worse, since he dumped her. She leaves and Eli gets a call from Nate: Jake does need a lawyer.
Eli and Maggie meet with Jake, who explains that his wife Brooke received an annulment from the Catholic Church three years after he went into his coma, and married his best friend and business partner Adam. Jake's current lawyer has told him to settle for ten million dollars but Jake refuses and wants to hire Eli. Eli believes they should contest the annulment, and sue the Church.
Eli goes to court where the judge and establishes precedent for suing the Church in a civil suit. The judge agrees to hear testimony from the priest who gave the annulment in an evidentiary hearing. Meanwhile, Keith testifies in his case and says that his interviews went great until he met with Mason directly. He got a distasteful look from Mason based on his unkempt Afro and his relatively poor clothing that he typically wore as a public defender. Jordan cross-examines Keith and has him testify that he has no evidence of discrimination and he didn't apply to any other firms. Keith says he didn't think that other firms like Jordan's would make a good fit, and Jordan notes that Mason made the same decision concerning Keith.
At the office, Maggie is Catholic and uncomfortable with suing the Church. Brooke and Adam come in and try to have an ex parte meeting. They complain that Jake's lawsuit is interfering with their lives and they just want to get on with their marriage. Eli gets them out and complains to Patti who let them in. She dismisses his complaint and tells him that Jordan wants a meeting. Jordan briefly discusses Eli's new case and then informs him he knows that Eli broke up with Taylor. He's concerned that he might have influenced Eli's decision and wonders why Eli broke off the engagement. Eli simply says that it's personal and refuses to elucidate. Jordan dismisses him, but as Eli steps out he sees Jake in his hospital gown, singing. More Jakes appear, singing "Good Lovin'" and dancing. Eli gets swept up in the musical number but snaps out of it to find himself up on a table as the other associates stare at him.
Later, Mason testifies about how he graduated number one from Harvard and suffered racial prejudice trying to get a job afterward. Jordan questions him and Mason confirms that his company has the most diverse hiring practices in the country. Matt has the employees stand up in court. On cross-examination, Keith questions Mason about whether he discriminates against blacks who don't try to "pass." Mason insists that has the right to hire whoever he wants, but Keith notes that it may have been the relative darkness of his skin that Mason judged him by. Jordan is clearly comfortable as Mason starts to get angry and talks about black men who use their race as an excuse. Mason insists that he dislikes that kind of arrogance, but Keith observes that Mason saw him as a punk with an Afro, not a lawyer.
Eli questions the priest who granted the annulment and establishes the Church's view son marriage. Afterward, Brooke approaches Jake and asks why he's filing the case. Jake insists that he still loves her, and that he believes she still loves him more than Adam. There's nothing she can do but walk away with Adam.
Jordan confronts Mason and tries to determine what he was thinking the day of the lunch interview. Mason admits that he wasn't comfortable with Keith's cheap suit and attitude, but believes he wouldn't have been suitable to hire for a corporate position. Mason notes that Jordan does the same thing at his firm. He suggests that Mason might want to consider settling but he'll win the case. Mason refuses.
Eli talks with Jake and says they'll get the annulment but it won't get Brooke back. Eli mentions that he knows how it feels to be living on borrowed time and it's a good idea not to waste time on a trial. Maggie picks up on the comment and Jake decides that he'll accept the settlement and drop the annulment issue. Afterward, Maggie asks Eli about his "borrowed time" comment but Eli dismisses it and says everything is fine with him.
Taylor is packing up her things when Eli arrives. He thanks her for not saying anything about his aneurysm to her father. She says that she still loves him and he shows her the engagement ring he still has. He wonders if the fact he couldn't return it is a sign but Taylor isn't sure what he means. Eli wonders that she still wants to be with him after everything that's happened, but she insists she wants to be with him no matter what. They kiss and end up in bed together. The next morning, Eli wakes up and finds that Taylor has left for court. He has a vision of Jake lying on the floor asking him for help. Eli goes to Nate and tries to get him to check out Jake again. Nate insists there's nothing wrong and that more tests would be a waste of time and money.
Keith and Jordan make their closing arguments. Keith recounts a story of how he was mistaken for a defendant and receives the same look that Mason gave him at the lunch. Jordan describes Mason's career as a civil rights advocate and notes he employed discretion, not discrimination. Jordan concludes by noting that if it were two white men, there would be no case.
Brooke meets by herself with Eli, Maggie, and Jake to sign the settlement papers. Adam is upset and refuses to come. As they sign, Jake wishes her and Adam good luck. He leaves, and Brooke admits that that's the man she loved. They hear a noise outside, and find that Jake has collapsed of a heart attack. He says "Help me, Stone" and then dies.
Later, Eli checks with Nate who reveals that Jake had an undetectable heart condition and that it apparently just stopped. Nate, clearly upset that he ignored his brother's warning, tells Eli to get out.
The jury finds in Mason's favor and afterward, Jordan is clearly uncomfortable with Mason's newly revealed attitudes. Jordan then talks to Keith and offers him a job at the firm. Keith takes Jordan's card and says he'll think about it.
Later, Taylor confronts her father about talking to Eli, wondering if that influenced Eli's change of heart. Jordan says he didn't say anything to cause Eli to change his mind, and Taylor insists that she knows what she wants to do and is prepared to fight for it.
That night, a drunk Nate comes to Eli's apartment. He asks how Eli knew and Eli admits he saw it in a vision, and that he believes the visions have a religious origin. Nate is skeptical until Eli mentions that in his vision Jake was singing "Good Lovin'." A shocked Nate explains that he went on a fishing trip with their father once and the entire time, their father sang one song. Nate put a cassette of it in their father's coffin: the song was "Good Lovin'," and no one else ever knew. Nate considers what Eli's said and the brothers settle down to share popcorn and a movie.
