Audrey: You've been living in our world, now we want to experience your world.
Ellen: Since when did my world become a lesbian coffeehouse?
Paige: Now, you guys remember when Ellen gets here we have to cheer her up because Susan dropped her like a gay hot potato.
Therapist: Are you going to talk to your friends?
Ellen: About me being gay? No, that's none of their business.
Therapist: Would you be more comfortable talking to your parents?
Ellen: You win, I'll talk to my friends.
Woman: Okay, Ms. Morgan, I have just one question for you. Are you gay?
Ellen: Yes, yes I am.
Woman: Great! Sign right there, and you sign here, and you sign here and sign here.
(Ellen signs)
Ellen: Wow! I didn't know it was so complicated!
Woman: Oh, congratulations! (She stamps pages and then takes out a big box and gives it Susan) Susan, here's your toaster oven!
Paige: I still can't believe Ellen's gay.
Spence: I always thought for a while she might be. I mean, as a kid she could always throw a football further than me, climb a tree faster, always beat me in arm-wrestling.
Joe: Did you ever think maybe you were gay?
Therapist: Ellen, if you keep this to yourself, it will eventually appear in your real life as little clues, that will eventually become tiresome.
Audrey: What should we call you, gay or lesbian?
Ellen: How about "Ellen"?
Kathy Najimy, having previously guest-starred in two episodes (as two different characters) can be glimpsed in the crowd at the lesbian coffee house.
In 2008, The Emmys Academy chose the most memorable comedy TV moments. Ellen coming out was in it, but it didn't make it to the top five.
Ellen has a line in one of her scenes with Oprah Winfrey (Therapist), where she comments that nobody gives a person a cake that reads, "Good for you! You're gay!" when they come out of the closet. After filiming of the episode was completed, during the curtain call in front of the studio audience, Oprah Winfrey presented Ellen DeGeneres with a large cake that read, "Good for you! You're gay!"
Laura Dern was nominated for an Emmy for her performance in this episode.
This episode was originally aired as a one-hour special.
