Episode Summary

EDIT
An awards dinner sponsored by the Crime Writers of America ends with writer Edgar Manning being presented with the coveted Blunt Instrument Award. Ellery is not present at the dinner due to the fact that he's home sick with a head cold. Later, while celebrating with a party held at his apartment, nasty, egotistical Manning calls up Ellery on the telephone in order to gloat about his win and is murdered while speaking with our hero on the phone.moreless

  • Who bumped off the unpopular winner of the Blunt Instrument Award - and why?

    9.0
Again, the nostalgia quotient is high in this 1947-set episode, with the "Blunt Instrument Awards" clearly representing the Edgar Allan Poe Awards and tough-guy new author Nick McVey bearing a close and none-too-flattering resemblance to real-life novelist Mickey Spillane. The first of Spillane's violent best-sellers (which swiftly became a 1940s publishing phenomenon) was published in, yes, 1947. The double-bill of B-movies attended by Dean Stockwell's character consists of two authentic titles of the immediate post-war period, films produced, like this show, by Universal. The plotting is very clever, and it's really nice to see Joanna Barnes, of "The Trials Of O'Brien", turning up as a suspect, whilst Eva Gabor seems to be parodying her own sister. This is an episode where the killer seems rather sympathetic.moreless
