Title: "A Thousand Cranes"
The title of this episode refers to the non-fiction children's novel Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. Written by Eleanor Coerr and published in 1977, the book tells the story of 12-year-old Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl living in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was dropped there at the end of World War II. Sadako develops leukemia from the radiation. Her best friend Chizuko tells her about an ancient Japanese legend that promises the granting of a wish to anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes. Inspired by the story, Sadako sets to the task, but only completes 644 cranes before her death. Like Sadako, this episode's terminally ill character Sean believes in the hope the cranes represent.
