In this episode we learn that Carter's birthday is June 4, 1970.
Goof: In the beginning of the episode the patient on PCP breaks the window between the trauma rooms, but in the rest of the episode the window is still intact.
Jenn: People die, Mark. You do the best you can. You're human.
Greene: I'm not supposed to be.
Jenn: Sure you are. You're the only one who doesn't know it.
Swift: A patient presents to ER: ptosis, myosis, and hydrosis. Dr. Ross, what does that bring to mind?
Ross: The Osis sisters. I dated the short one.
Chen: John, could you please help me with a patient?
Carter: Why? Is it a procedure you've already done?
Chen: No. It's a guy who's really drunk, smashed his finger in a car door, and he's pawing at me. He also smells terrible.
Carter: And you have a problem with that?
(a very tall man, on drugs and still strapped to his gurney, walks out of the ER)
Susan: Full moon, Saturday night.
Carter: Cool.
Susan: Ah, midnight, the witching hour. Let's make room for the punks, skunks and drunks.
Carol: Hey, every full moon should be lady's night.
Susan: Yeah, we were terrific.
Carol: Like Thelma and Louise, man.
Susan: More like Lucy and Ethel.
(responding to a surprise drill called at 2:00am)
Ross: What's going on? Where are the victims?
Benton: You're looking at them.
In this episode, Michael Ironside makes his first appearance as Dr. William "Wild Willy" Swift, the interim ER Chief that replaces Dr. Morgenstern. Ironside previously worked with Anthony Edwards on the 1986 film Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis.
Music: "Twist and Shout," The Isley Brothers; "Born to be Wild," Steppenwolf
The Nintendo arcade game that Mark Greene is playing is Killer Instinct.
Carol: It's darkest before dawn.
This is a reference to the proverb "The darkest hour is just before the dawn." Thomas Fuller, the English theologian and historian, may have been the first person to commit this notion to print; his religious travelogue A Pisgah-Sight Of Palestine And The Confines Thereof (1650) contains the line "It is always darkest just before the Day dawneth." Many, many authors and poets since have incorporated a version of the adage into their writings.
Carol: Like Thelma and Louise, man.
Susan: More like Lucy and Ethel.
Carol is making a reference to the 1991 film Thelma and Louise, starring Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, about a couple of women whose weekend getaway turns sour and transforms the two into outlaw heroes. Susan is making a reference to the 1950s situation comedy I Love Lucy, starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, as well as Vivian Vance as Ethel.
