- Though spelled correctly when he is listed as the series creator in the opening credits, Michael Crichton's last name is incorrectly spelled "Chrichton" when he is listed with the other executive producers in the end credits of this episode. This mistake was repeated in most of the Season 4 episodes and in all of the Season 6 episodes.

- This episode marks the first guest appearance by Alan Alda in a five episode story arc. His portrayal of Dr. Gabriel Lawrence garnered him an Emmy Award nomination in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series category.

- While working on a trauma, Dr. Lawrence comments that a creative treatment he used is "an old army trick." This may be a veiled reference to the television series M*A*S*H; Alan Alda, who portrays Dr. Lawrence, starred on that program as a thoracic surgeon assigned to a frontline surgical unit during the Korean War.
