Goof: When Sidney arrives at the hospital, the medic says she is 8 years old, but later in the episode they say that she is 10 years old.
Lukaism: Kovac tells Weaver to put his name "into the mixture" (mix) as a candidate for the position of Chief of Emergency Medicine.
Ray: Hey, can I come by the house tonight, pick up my amp?
Neela: Whatever, I really don't feel like sticking around for this dumb thing. I ditch if you do, I've got dinner reservations at Gibsons if you want a drink or five?
Ray: Wow, I like the way you think, roomie. Your treat right?
Neela: As long as you stop calling me that.
Neela: How much trouble do you think we'll get in for not showing up?
Ray: Well, I'm not working again until Saturday so hopefully thing's will blown over by then.
Neela: Are you kidding me? I'm working tomorrow. That's great Ray, now I'll get punished for the both of us.
Ray: What do you think, Kovac versus Clemente in a street fight. Kovac has size but I feel like Clemente's kinda squirrelly.
Sam: I think you need help.
Eve: You know Joe Butchiatelli?
Injured cop: Yeah, over at the academy, he's your brother?
Eve: No, he gave me my first orgasm.
(Ray and Pratt look up)
Eve: What? It was a milestone.
Sam: The guy's like a rogue elephant, what do you wanna do? Shoot him with a tranquilizer gun?
Clemente: You got one of those? (Sam turns away) C'mon, it was just a joke. Hey X-ray, c'mon you and me, like a tag team. You distract him and I'll shoot him.
Ray: Distract him with what?
Clemente: You pretend to be a rodeo-clown, c'mon, do something.
(Luka's watching TV as Abby rings the door bell rings; she turns to leave)
Luka: Hey.
Abby: Hey.
Luka: Want to come in?
(they go into his apartment)
Abby: You didn't... you didn't go to that de-briefing.
Luka: Did you?
Abby: Yeah. It was just me, Eve and Clemente.
Luka: You hungry? Want some pizza? I can warm it up for you...
Abby: No, I'm not hungry.
Luka: Okay, mad about something?
Abby: What do you think?
Luka: Yes? I didn't need to go to that de-briefing...
Abby: I don't care about that!
Luka: What are you talking about?
Abby: I'm talking about you and Clemente! And whatever it is that is going on between the two of you. If you want to get into a pissing match with him, that's fine. Just leave me out of it!
Luka: He was wrong!
Abby: And that's the most important thing, isn't it? He was wrong and you were right? And while you were arguing about that, that little girl died. As if she hadn't suffered enough... God, she was ten years old, Luka! And he had her for months, and I just... and I just can't stop thinking about what she must have gone through, and I can't stop thinking about how afraid she must have been, and I can't stop thinking about why we couldn't save her! I just... I...
(Luka quickly moves toward her, holds her face in his hands, and kisses her)
Luka: Hey Kerry. Have you found someone to replace Susan as Chief of the ER?
Kerry: We're still looking at candidates.
Luka: Is Clemente the favorite?
Kerry: He's certainly up there. Why?
Luka: Well, I'm not sure he's the right person for the job.
Kerry: Yeah, well if you think of somebody better, feel free to give me a call.
Luka: Ah... What about me?
Kerry: You? I didn't think you wanted to be chief. Luka, it's really not your style.
Luka: Maybe it's time for me to change my style. Look, I've been here for a long time. I know the people, I know the department. I just want to put my name into the mixture.
Kerry: Mix. Alright, I'll let the committee know you're interested.
Luka: Thank you.
(About Clemente and Eve's mandatory meeting)
Neela: They want us to express our feelings about what happened today.
Luka: Well, today sucked. Good night.
Luka: Isn't that your patient?
Clemente: What, that I can do with my eyes closed.
Luka: It's probably best if you didn't.
Abby: Is this a gang shooting?
Luka: Father used his daughter as a human shield.
Abby: Lovely. Well you missed show and tell.
Luka: Huh?
Abby: Clemente is implementing some changes. New equipment. They gonna make him head of the E.R? That's what they're saying.
Luka: The guy who got you and Neela suspended for waiting on a monkey?
Abby: It was a chimp.
Luka: Well, if he wants the chief position he can have it. Mabye he can open up a petting zoo in the doctor's lounge.
Luka: Our job is to save lives, not to judge them.
Mr. Butler: (talking about Neela) I've got lawyers, lady.
Sam: Yeah? Well I've got Jerry, so unless you want to be carried out of here like a dirty diaper, I suggest you sit down.
Jansen: I know what you're thinking. You want me to die.
Neela: I want you to shut up!
Jerry: (to Sam, after the exchange with Mr. Butler) You know I abhor violence.
Sam: I know. But he doesn't, so put on your best tough guy face.
Frank: Well if it isn't the "Hatchet Lady." Axe anybody else today?
Sam: Stick a sock in it, Frank.
Yau: (talking about Sidney) You know after everything she's been through, I'm not sure she isn't better off.
Abby: I don't think that anyone is better off dead.
Victor: This department needs a lot of work.
Eve: Yeah, it needs a kick in the ass.
Eve: (about Clemente's nosebleed) Does that happen often?
Clemente: Only after five or six beers and a bar fight.
Neela: (as she goes to phone and find out about Gallant) Do you have something sarcastic to say, Frank?
Frank: No.
Neela walks through the ER desk, in a black dress and heels.
Clemente: ¡Oye! Yo coño mamí. ¡Que sexy!
Neela: Thank you, I think.
Frank: What's the occasion? Is Playboy doing "a girls of the ER" edition?
Neela: Bugger off Frank.
In this episode, John Stamos makes his first appearance as Tony Gates. He would join the main cast as a series regular in the Season 13 episode "Graduation Day."
Although in the opening credits, Scott Grimes does not appear in this episode.
This episode was drawn from two recent real-life cases. Sydney's shooting was based on a July 10, 2005, incident in Los Angeles where a 19-month-old girl was used as a "human shield" by her father and was shot and killed by police. The father also died in the shooting. The other incident occurred on July 2, 2005, when an alleged kidnapper was spotted in a Denny's in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, with a girl who had been missing for 6 weeks. A customer recognized the suspect and called the police. The staff at Denny's stalled the suspect until he was arrested.
