The Peace of Wild Things

Aired Thursday 10:00 PM Nov 11, 1999 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Goof: At the end of the episode, Dr. Lawrence recites a portion of the poem "The Peace of Wild Things" and attributes it to William Blake. The poem was in fact written by Wendell Berry.

  • Quotes

    • (about his Alzheimer's diagnosis)
Dr. Lawrence: I was thinking of committing suicide, but I wasn't sure when I should do it. If I did it too early, I'd miss out on what little life I had left. If I waited too long, I wouldn't remember to do it.

    • Carol: I got a pregnant junkie arrested for possession so she could get clean in jail and give the baby a chance.
Mark: Want to talk about it? Drown our sorrows in a couple of ginger ales?

    • (reciting from Wendell Berry's "The Peace of Wild Things")
Dr. Lawrence: When despair for the world grows in me...
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

    • Carol: The girls are throwing me a surprise baby shower.
Greene: I thought that was supposed to be a surprise.
      Carol: I'll look surprised!

    • Carter: Why don't you pee in the cup? Give it to Malik, that's what he lives for.

  • Notes

This mistake was repeated in most of the Season 4 episodes and in all of the Season 6 episodes.

    • This episode marks Gloria Reuben's final appearance as a series regular. She would go on to make a guest appearance in the Season 14 episode "Status Quo," reprising her role as Jeanie Boulet.

    • Although in the opening credits, Goran Visnjic does not appear in this episode.
