Luka blows Abby off, and an already-stressed Abby has to deal with an unexpected visit from her estranged mother, who isn't taking the meds prescribed for her bipolar disorder. Corday, eager to leave work for a vacation with Greene, makes a poor surgical decision; after she leaves, her patient experiences post-surgical complications. Benton's nephew is shot and dies. Benton hears Malucci refer to his late nephew as a "banger" and Benton beats him. Chen decides to put her baby up for adoption and visits the child's father, nurse Frank Bacon.     Beautiful.. So well written and outplayed.

    Benton's nephew who we saw some episodes ago, is now back while shot. Maluccie acts not properly and when Cleo finds Benton's sister at waiting area, she understands. She rushes to get Benton and he tries everything he could, but they do not manage to save him. The sorrow and anger, superbly out played.

    Abby is having hard times as her mother, who has neurological illness, is on town, on the hospital, trying to find her and makes scenes. Abby takes a break with Carter and tells him her story - and there are lot to think about. And the ending scene, when she founds her mother at train station. Beautiful.

    And Elizabeth.. she makes mistake..moreless

    In this episode, Sally Field makes her first appearance as Abby's mother, Maggie. And what an entrance it is! Maggie is bi-polar and off her medication. She is on a manic "high" and is hyper, overly animated, nervous and flirtatious with the staff.

    At first, Abby denies that Maggie is her mother. In that moment, we get a glimpse of the years of heartache that Abby has endured with her Mom. Abby is both frustrated and compassionate. I really felt for Abby here. She just wants to be left alone to do her job. This episode definitely sets the stage for the mother/daughter drama that will ensue in subsequent episodes. Definitely worth watching!moreless

    They could not get a better person to play as Abby's mom. When you look at the two actresses, you can believe that Field is Maura Tierney's mother. They have the same build and same hair type.

    Second, Sally Field is a legend. She is a two time Oscar winner and a two time Golden Globe winner. She is a great actress. She also wins an Emmy for her role as Maggie in ER.

    We learn that Maggie is bipolar, and does not do a good job staying on her meds. Abby spent a good deal of her life taking care of her mom and brother, when it should have been Maggie taking care of her children. This turns out to be a very important fact for us to know Abby better.

    Maggie's character has opportunity for many emotions that change rapidly. Field does a fabulous job playing this character, and whole heartedly deserved an Emmy for her role.moreless
