  • Can a "tiny drop of poison" - verbal poison, that is - destroy a man's career, or marriage, or life?

Lillian Hellman's 1930s play "The Children's Hour" had been filmed in 1961, and clearly inspired this episode. To ruin an American diplomat who opposes his plans to get rich out of an Anglo-American dam project, an unscrupulous Arab plants the rumour that the diplomat is "emotionally unstable" - i.e., homosexual. This was a very rare topic in American or British TV drama at the time, and the script forthrightly cites this euphemism only to scorn it. Unfortunately, it offers only banal stereotypes of homosexual behaviour or characterisation, and the victimised diplomat does seem remarkably naive for a senior State Department official. The story does contain a certain ambiguity, and ends effectively with a close-up of the hero's unsophisticated, much-younger wife, now unable - quite - to trust his assurances.moreless
