  • An ageing veteran of the Civil War confronts a police lieutenant in modern Spain, and old conflicts are likely to influence present-day problems.

In the early 1960s, Spain became such a popular holiday destination for British and American tourists that many people were willing to forget the events of the Spanish Civil War, only a quarter of a century earlier, and also the fact that Spain had become, under Franco, a military dictatorship. This episode doesn't forget these things, and the beautiful setting becomes distinctly edgy as a Spanish police officer seeks out a killer in hiding at an American family's villa. Is the killer a simple anti-Falangist, as he claims? Is he a communist insurgent, as the newspapers say? Or is the truth different again? Memories of the Civil War cloud judgment, and arguments on both sides are set out with clarity and force in an intelligent script. Awkward politics aren't avoided, but the ending's a little too pat.moreless
