  • During a forty-day festival in Munich, questions of identity - and motive - are of great concern to two American intelligence officers.

The participants in the festival often wear masks and assume new roles - it's a nice metaphor for the chief concern of this episode, where the leading characters must pretend to be things they're not, and where motives for pretence are, until the ending, largely unclear. Personal and emotional loyalties turn out to mean far more than patriotic attitudes, and it is significant that the events are mostly orchestrated by a character with no emotional, nationalistic or moral ties at all. The mysterious Mr. Lindemann, well played by Maxwell Shaw (husband of the series' casting director), is only interested in money, not in causes - he survives in a hard world and slowly earns, not affection, but a grudging respect.moreless
