  • Like the real-life Rudolf Hess, a top-ranking Nazi soldier arrives in wartime Britain to negotiate peace - but this one, unlike Hess, is an anti-Nazi involved in the generals' assassination plot against Hitlermoreless

Written by Larry Cohen (later a well-known director of horror films), this episode cunningly combines two real-life stories of World War II to create a study in conscience. Fritz Weaver gives a fine performance as a loyal German whose hatred of Hitler leads him to what many regard as treachery. The frame of the episode is this character's return to Germany, long after the war, where he finds he is still regarded as a traitor, even by his own mother. The difficulty involved in doing the right thing - and for the right reason - is examined in subtle detail, and the conclusion is alarming.moreless
