  • Officially, the British government can't stop a progressive African leader from being extradited to his own country (and certain death). But, unofficially, a rescue might just be possible - if the right man can be found to do it.moreless

The spirit of John Le Carre - whose bestselling novel "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold" had appeared the previous year - hangs over this harsh story. Like that book's hero, the protagonist of the episode is a washed-up drunk, an embarrassment to his ruthless employers. He, too, is sacked; afterwards, he talks his way into a vital mission led by his former lover, never knowing that he has been set up. He is the sacrificial lamb, the fall guy, someone about whom the department can safely deny all knowledge if anything goes wrong. William Lucas has a fine desperation as this unhappy, immature man, with Millicent Martin (in an entirely serious role for once) equally good as his affectionate, despairing colleague.moreless
