The year is 1974; Mattai is a newly-emergent African nation with a leader said to be a Marxist; and its delegate to the United Nations seems to think the CIA is trying to undermine the country's stability. Perish the thought...
Setting this story a decade into the future was a rather curious idea - did its makers think that a 1963 audience might not believe it in a contemporary setting? The reputation of the Central Intelligence Agency had been unravelling amongst journalists and radicals for some time already, but it was as the 1960s developed - and the escalation of the Vietnam war, the struggle against racism and the numerous murders of eminent figures dominated the headlines - that anti-CIA feeling became commonplace. Here, a hard-nosed reporter (the ever-excellent Arthur Kennedy) is forced to realise that his principled old friend is involved in plots against the new African country - and the secret power of the agency comes to alarm him even more than the prospect of communism in Africa.
