There have been many controversies over the many years of Eurovision, but there are probably none bigger than that witnessed in the 1969 Contest. Firstly the number of entrants dropped from seventeen to sixteen after Austria refused to compete, stating that they did not wish to send a singer to a country ruled by a dictator. But this contest will forever be remembered for its final verdict and announcing of the winner, sorry winners. Despite being in its fourteenth year, there still was no rule over what procedure should be implemented in the event of a tie for first place. After all the results were in, it was revealed that there was a tie for first, but not between two countries, or even three, but between four different nations. As there were no rules in place, all four nations were declared as the 'winner,' and because of the tie there were not enough medals to be presented, so the songwriters had to wait until after the contest to receive their medals. This controversy would also see four nations choose not to compete in the 1970 Contest, none of them being one of the joint winners in this contest.moreless
