Controversy once again reigned supreme in the 1973 Contest. The Spanish entry "Eres tu" was believed to have been a rewrite of the Yugoslav entry in the 1966 Contest. There were many calls for Spain to be disqualified, which never happened. The Portugese song was a direct attack on the country's decaying dictatorship, and the fear of terrorism was rife, following on from the 1972 Munich Olympics. The fear was so great that the audience was instructed not to stand up before, after or during a performance, otherwise they risked being shot.
