Episode Summary

The 1st Eurovision Song Contest - Lugano, Switzerland
For the first ever Eurovision Song Contest, seven nations were vying to be crowned the winners. Unlike any other Eurovision Song Contest, each country could submit two songs for judging, even if both were sung by the same singer, as was the case for Switzerland, and the results of the contest, except for the winner, remain unknown. The other nations competing were Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

This contest was mainly a radio event, but there were cameras filming the show for the select few Europeans who owned televisions. However, no known footage of the contest has survived.moreless

    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    • TRIVIA (3)

      • The United Kingdom, Denmark and Austria were all disqualified before the final contest as they failed to announce their representative before the deadline. The Festival of British Popular Song contest was intended to produce the United Kingdom entrants, but it wasn't held until after the Eurovision Song Contest.

      • The only video footage that has survived from this contest is newsreel footage of the encore performance by Lys Assia, singing her winning song "Refrain."

      • Each competing nation sent two jury members to vote in the contest. However Luxembourg did not send any jury members, rather allowing the Swiss jury to vote in their place.

    • QUOTES (0)

    • NOTES (7)

      • The interval act was Joyeux Rossignols.

      • There were 14 song entries this year.

      • Winning Song: "Refrain" (Switzerland)

      • Judging System

Each competing nation had two judges who would provide a score between 1 and 10 for each song, including that of their home country. The marks were tallied up and the winner was the nation with the most points.

      • The order of the performances were as follows:-

        1. Jetty Paerl (Netherlands) "De Vogels Van Holland"
        2. Lys Assia (Switzerland) "Das Alte Karussell"
        3. Fud Leclerc (Belgium) "Messieurs Les Noyés De La Seine"
        4. Walter Andreas Schwarz (Germany) "Im Wartesaal Zum Großen Glück"
        5. Mathé Altéry (France) "Le Temps Perdu"
        6. Michèle Arnaud (Luxembourg) "Ne Crois Pas"
        7. Franca Raimondi (Italy) "Aprite Le Finestre"
        8. Corry Brokken (Netherlands) "Voorgoed Voorbij"
        9. Lys Assia (Switzerland) "Refrain"
        10. Mony Marc (Belgium) "Le Plus Beau Jour De Ma Vie"
        11. Freddy Quinn (Germany) "So Geht Das Jede Nacht"
        12. Dany Dauberson (France) "Il Est Là"
        13. Michèle Arnaud (Luxembourg) "Les Amants De Minuit"
        14. Tonina Torrielli (Italy) "Amami Se Vuoi"

      • It is believed, though it is only speculation, that Walter Andreas Schwarz's (Germany) "Im Wartesaal Zum Großen Glück" ranked second with the judges, which is why Germany hosted the 1957 Contest.

      • The winning song was Lys Assia's (Switzerland) Refrain. The rest of the results remain unknown.
