Following the break-up of the Soviet Union and creation of many new countries in Eastern Europe over the last few years there was a huge influx of nations wishing to compete in the 1994 Contest. In order to cope with this demand, it was deemed that the seven lowest ranked nations from the 1993 Contest could not compete, which were Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Israel, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Turkey. In their place there were seven nations making their debut appearance; Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, and Slovakia. Italy chose not to participate this year, so Cyprus, having ended up seventh last in 1993, was able to enter. Luxembourg dediced to call it quits, and as of yet, have not returned to the Eurovision Song Contest. This made a total number of twenty-five performances. The contest was hosted by Cynthia ni Mhurchu and Gerry Ryan, and they spoke in English, French and Irish.moreless
