    • When Louis walks across the field with his newly-moussed hair, the music playing is an imitation of the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive," used in the movie Saturday Nght Fever when John Travolta is first seen walking down the street. Later at the track meet, the music played resembles the Chariots of Fire theme composed by Vangelis. That was an Academy Award-winning movie (and soundtrack) about the British track team at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. Edit
    • On the wall of the gym at the junior high is a big picture of Donnie with the legend "I Play Because I Can" beneath it. Edit
    • When Louis is telling his family that he has joined the track team, Donny first has the salad bowl beside him, the shot cuts to Louis holding the bowl and putting salad in his plate, then cuts to Donny handing Louis the salad bowl, where Louis puts salad onto an empty plate. Edit

    • During a fantasy sequence, Louis imagines himself receiving a big endorsement check from a Michael Jordan lookalike. There's a poster in the shot that says "Live Like Louis," a take-off on the "Be Like Mike" advertising slogan. Edit
    • After Louis mousses his hair and walks on to the track field, his walk and the music playing are an allusion to John Travolta's famous strut in the 1977 film, Saturday Night Fever. Edit
    • Louis: Funny guys can run. Bill Cosby was on his track team. Louis is right. Actor/comedian Bill Cosby was in fact a member of the track team when he attended Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Edit
