Ren mistakes Gil for a merman because he's using a "uni-fin." But when she first sees him in the water, it looks like his "scales" extend further up his legs.
Tawny: Oh, that's so sad. Tom: No, it's really more pathetic.
Ren: (to Monique and Ruby) Yeah, I met a guy... sorta.
Ren: (to Ruby's guy) Oh my gosh, that has got to be the lamest line I have ever heard.
Monique: There's going to be a lot of B-O-Y-S! Ruby: And I hope they're C-U-T-E! Ren: And I-N-T-E-L-L-I-G-E-N-T! (pause) That's intelligent. (pause) I thought we were spelling stuff..
Louis: So when did you start hanging out with Zack and his crew? Twitty: Oh last spring break when your dad made you take those temper tantrum classes. Louis: NOW YOU LISTEN HERE! I EXPRESS MYSELF APPROPRIATLEY! HEAR THAT ALL YOU PEOPLE?!?
Monique's Gut: Hey! Monique: Well hel-lo Mr. Hawaiian shorts!
Ren: (about Gil) Not a bad kisser...for a fish.
Twitty: Do you actually know how to surf? Louis: I have the reflexes of a cat. And ah, the dexterity of a jeweler. And, I can open my eyes underwater!
In 2007, Shia LaBeouf (who plays Louis Stevens) was later in a movie entitled Surf's Up.
The show ends with the a music-video version of an original song by A.J. Trauth (Twitty), "Dawn Patrol," sung by Christy Carlson Romano (Ren). This video had been shown previously on the Disney Channel as a promo for this episode.
Broadcast in Australia in February 2003.
During the scene when Twitty is in trouble after the first gigantic wave and Louis rushes across the beach with his surfboard to save him, the music, cinematography, and editing are all highly evocative of the syndicated hit TV show Baywatch (1989-2001), which included David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson among its stars.
