    • TRIVIA (7)

      • Russell has learned that having great food at Base Camp is key to the success of the expedition. Many expeditions that serve less appetizing food fail because the climbers can't be persuaded to take in enough calories in preparation for the summit attempt. On summit day, each climber burns 15,000 calories- almost a week's worth of caloric intake for a normal man.

      • Sherpas have a real physical advantage when it comes to surviving at high altitude. They have larger hearts and lungs, as well as wider veins, which facilitates the working of their cardiopulmonary systems. They are also short and wiry, so they don't have extra bulk to carry up the mountain.

      • The Sherpas, as they a laying down the ropes for this year's climb, cut away as much of the old ropes from previous years as they can, and mark the new ones with colorful bits of fabric so that they can be easily identified.

      • Climber Rod Baber will attempt a technological first by making a cell phone call from the summit. Motorola is backing his venture.

      • Asthmatic Mogens Jensen is again attempting to summit without using bottled oxygen. The pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline, which manufactures the medications Mogens takes, is backing his adventure.

      • David Tait and Sherpa Phurba will try the first double traverse of Everest. They'll climb the mountain twice, first going up Tibet's North Ridge to the summit, then down Nepal's South Ridge. They'll then turn around and climb back up the South Ridge, cross the summit again, and head down the North Ridge to where they started.

      • Season two will again show the climbers ascending Everest from the North, or Tibetan, Ridge. This more difficult side is Brice's specialty.

Greg Child - Expert Climber, and official blogger for Discovery's Everest website.
        Maxut Zhumayev - Kazakh Climber.
        Vassily Pivtsov - Kazakh Climber.

      • All of Russell's Sherpas went up through the ranks with his team, from starting out as cooks to bearers to climbing the mountain as guides. But they are rewarded with what for them is staggering wealth- they make up to $18,000 a in three months of work, which is more than most Nepali make in an entire lifetime.

      • The Sherpas make the earliest summit on record this year as they lay down the safety ropes. They summited on the same date last year, but they were earlier by several hours in 2007, reaching the top at 1:30 pm.

      • As of the beginning of this climbing season, Russell has taken 166 people to the summit of Everest, and he has never lost a climber.

      • Only one in three climbers makes it to the summit.
