    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (4)

      • Supplemental oxygen is necessary up in the Death Zone, but it has dangers of it's own. In order to keep the lines from freezing, all water has been removed. As a result, those who are breathing it are being dehydrated by it at the same time.

      • Team Two:

        Mogens Jensen
        Katsusuke Yanagisawa
        Kobayashi Yuzo (Japanese Climber)
        Yoshida Takenori (Japanese Climber)
        Josette Valloton (Swiss Climber)

      • Each bottle of oxygen carted up the mountain costs $650, so any climber who wants to start on oxygen early has to pay a hefty price for the privilege.

      • Ultraviolet radiation increases 5% for every 1,000 feet. At the Second Step (28,300 ft), where the Irish climber lost his glasses for 20 minutes, the UV radiation was 15 times the safe limit, causing snow blindness. Snow blindness is a severe sunburn of the cornea, and in extreme cases, the accompanying blindness can become permanent.

    • QUOTES (2)

      • Rod: (from Camp 4) I can't believe it's nearly over, sort of thing.
Woody: Nearly over? It hasn't even begun!
        Rod: Hasn't even begun?!
Dean: Nothing can prepare you for summit day.

      • (Woody and Bill talking over the radio)
Woody: (referring to Tim's extra bottle of oxygen) Tim's happily sucking oxygen, so he's a happy man.
Bill: You put him on the baby bottle?
Woody: Yeah, big baby, big blue bottle.
Tim: (breaking into the transmission) For the record, I am not on the bottle. I am off the bottle.

    • NOTES (3)

      • Italian Team Member Pierangelo Maurizio, one of the two searched for by Russell's and several other expeditions, was still unaccounted for at the end of the 2007 climbing season, and presumed dead.

      • Team One finds a body in Camp 4, and they guess that it must be pretty new. The Sherpas can't carry bodies down the mountain, but they do move them out of the way and out of sight, if possible.
