Episode Summary

EDIT
Andy's neighbor and friend Nina (Stephanie Niznik) is ostracized by the townspeople when they discover she is a surrogate mother for a woman in her mid-50s. Andy's clumsy attempt to come to Nina's defense backfires, but she turns to him and Ephram for help when the baby makes an unexpectedly early arrival. Meanwhile, Ephram is dealt an emotional blow when Amy disinvites him to a party in order to gain the approval of her friends; and Delia attempts to befriend the school bully, Magilla (guest star Bret Loehr).moreless

  • We see the true side of Amy in this spectacular episode.

    9.0
I really liked how they brought out Amy's character so quickly. She realizes that she's made a mistake in trying to get to know Ephram... for the wrong reasons that is. Her friends get angry when she invites lonely Ephram to a party, and they dis invite him. Amy realizes that Ephram is a guy she really cares about, and decides that she will skip the party too. The two of them, Amy and Ephram, really shone in this episode. I didn't give it a 10, only due to the really bizarre story-line of Nena giving birth to a baby for a 55-year old. Leave that kinda story-line to Ally McBeal and David E. Kelly!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Goof: When Walter's Sea Breeze is first sinking, Andy puts his (left) foot on the hole trying to plug it. The Sea Breeze then starts flooding from two more holes (as seen by the fountains of water) and Andy brings both of his feet to cover those holes but at this point there's no water coming in from the first hole. Is the ship sinking or not?

    • Goof: When Ephram enters the Swans' practice room, they are doing Degages. Since they are wearing pointe shoes, they would probably make some noise. However, they are slamming their feet in to the position and 'clunking'. They clunk when they are doing the swan dance, also. A definite dancing mistake.

  • QUOTES (15)

    • Ephram: This woman is about to give birth.
Donut Shop Employee: No way. I just mopped.

    • Ephram: (Arguing with Amy) Explain to me what? Why your friends are total bitches, or why you continue to be friends with them?!

    • Nina: I'm not a single parent by choice.
      Andy: Me neither.

    • Andy: Why are you eating that before dinner?
Ephram: Cause I know who's cooking it.

    • Walter: (About Edna) We went steady in the 5th grade. She introduced me to hickies and shoplifting.

    • Amy: Maybe if you weren't scowling all the time people wouldn't feel the need to disinvite you places.
Ephram: You're right maybe I should take up football and cow tipping and then I could the most popular boy in the school.

    • Delia: You should be happy you made a friend.
Ephram: What's that supposed to mean?
Delia: It's not easy. Everybody in my class has known each other since the nineties.

    • Nina: (shouting) Three bakers on the fly!
Dr. Brown: Where's the kitchen? Pittsburgh?
Nina: Simon only hears out of his left ear.
Dr. Brown: What's the matter with his right one?
Nina: He doesn't have a right one.

    • Andy: You really ought to take a squeegee to these menus - that or serve them as an appetizer.

    • Andy: Is this spot taken, doctor?
Dr. Abbott: Oh, that it were.
Andy: I've never eaten lunch here before, just dinner. Do you eat here every day?
Dr. Abbott: (Annoyed) I used to.

    • Andy: When you have another medical question, feel free to come back - in fact mail it.

    • Ephram: Boy, can I clear a hallway or what?
Amy: That's Kayla and Paige. They're allergic to anyone who's not at the top-2 popularity percentile.
Ephram: I'm only 98 percent short.

    • Employee: We could be fined for this. This county has a very strict health code.
Ephram: Yeah, how long you been using ants as chocolate sprinkles? Where are the knives?
Employee: Uh... all we have are spatulas.
Ephram: (Holding up an egg whisk) What about this? Will this work?
Employee: Yeah, if you're making a custard.
      Ephram: Give me another pot.
      Employee: What size?
Ephram: Big enough for me to barf in.

    • Amy: My friend Kayla is having a birthday party. Wanna go?
Ephram: Do you need somebody to play Happy Birthday?
Amy: Come on... you'll be my guest.
Ephram: I don't know... me, your friends... lit candles in the same room?

    • Andy: Right now he is doing the welcome speech. Then there's going to be a brief order for confession and forgiveness. That's where people confess and forgive briefly, in an orderly fashion. Then we'll do the first hymn... then lesson 2... gospel lesson... another hymn... then the sermon... then the offering, and... Jesus! How long is this thing?

  • NOTES (4)

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • The patient that lent the Sea Breeze to Dr. Brown is named Walter Cunningham. This may be a reference to Walter Cunningham in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, who pays off a debt by bartering such things as a bag of hickory nuts.
