Everybody Hates Chris

Season 1 Episode 12

Everybody Hates A Part-Time Job

Aired Thursday 8:00 PM Jan 19, 2006 on The CW

  • Trivia

    • When Chris is delivering papers, a modern-day TOYS`R`US can be seen in the background, even though the new version of the logo was made around 2002 not the 80s, which the time in the story is based on.

    • We learn that Julius' nickname with his work buddies is "Herc," short for "Hercules" because of his strength.

    • For the first time, Chris experiences his father curse in front of him while he is on the job, but all the viewers get to hear is a loud horn honking.

  • Quotes

    • Chris: $20?
Julius: Yeah. You earned every penny.
Chris: But I need $40 for the jacket.
Julius: No you don't. You want $40. There's a difference.

    • Julius: (to Chris after he asks for an allowance) I'm not giving you money for sittin' around doing nothing. An allowance? I allow you to sleep here at night. I allow you to eat them potatoes. I allow you to use my lights. I allow you to drink my Kool-Aid. I allow you to nibble on them green beans. (3 hours later) I allow you to look at that TV. I allow you to run up my gas bill. I allow you to walk up my stairs. I allow you to ask me these ridiculous-ass questions.

    • Chris: (narrating) Instead of Drew wearing my old clothes, I wore his old clothes. I was the first kid to get hand-me-ups!

    • Rochelle: (to emergency room nurse) If she doesn't get to see a doctor, we're gonna have to get you a doctor!

    • Chris: (narrating) We delivered papers in Brooklyn. We delivered papers in Queens, Chinatown, Little Italy. Spanish Harlem, Puerto Rican Harlem, the Bronx, Greenwich Village. We delivered papers to people I didn't even know who could read.

    • Chris: (narrating) If you watch tv, you'll know that the emergency room is one of the most exciting places you can be. Wrong!

    • Chris: (narrating) In the game of Dare, there are no rules, there are no regulations, and the game doesn't end 'til somebody's dead.

    • Julius: You can come to delivery with me. I'll be back in a few hours, now be downstairs at 3.30, not 3.31.
Chris: Don't worry, I'll be down earlier.
Julius: No such thing as earlier. You're either on time or you're late.

    • Chris: (narrating) I heard about allowances, but I didn't know they actually existed. I thought it was just something that happened on tv.

    • Chris: (narrating)When broke kids get bored, they play one of the cheapest games ever invented, I Dare You.

  • Notes

    • The screen that flashes up at the beginning of the show now reads 'Brooklyn 1983', marking the start of a new year for Chris.

    • This episode was in memory of Ray Cymoszinski who died 25-12-2005 of a heart attack. Ray Cymoszinski was the sound mixer of this show.

  • Allusions

    • At the end, when Chris finally bought the jacket, it was Summer, but he used it anyway. In the movie Down To Earth, Lance (Chris Rock) said the same story. The show has alluded that movie many times since both include part of Chris Rock's life.

    • The Robotussin scene was a reference to Rock's album Bigger and Blacker, in which he talked about the ubiquitous curative properties of the well-known cough medicine, comically listing absurd examples like treating a broken leg with it.
